Strategic iPhone Price Curve

So im thinking of buying an iPhone to replace my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Leaving aside if I should do it or not I'm keen to work out the best way to buy it.

The iPhone 14 is likely to drop very soon and I'm in no hurry as my current phone is in perfect working order (albeit a bit long in the tooth).

So here are my questions. When can we expect big discounts for the 13? Have I just missed the boat for short term savings? I assume Apple will jack up the price of the 13 around the release of the 14 to make the 14 look like a better prospect.

Are there ever pre-order discounts or launch specials?

One element that gives me pause is the fact that my old Samsung will still receive security updates well after Apple has left an iPhone 13 user high and dry without support not to mention how quickly apps stop working on old iOS devices.
[Edit clearly I got that wrong 😊]

This makes no sense. It’s the other way around. The 2015 iPhone 6S will still get next iOS 15 update…

No one has a crystal ball for the when to buy query.

Cheers, good to know. I thought it was the other way around.

So given this fact, if the 14 isn't a big upgrade ill probably keep an eye out for a heavily discounted 13.

        heavily discounted 13

how heavy we talking? 13 is still going to be wanted for a while yet - hell people still buy 11/12's.
imo if you are spending that much on a phone its worth spending the few hundred more to future proof yourself for another year especially with apples proven track record of arbitrarily denying features to older (but theoretically more than capabale tech) eg ipad pro (non-m1) not getting stage manager.

      • for a heavily discounted 13

        Ain't going to happen.

Sounds like you are not ready and just passively looking.

I think OP should go back on OzB deals and plot prices, date and release of iphones. Might give you a good chart. Since your current phone is still going strong, you got plenty of time to get that chart formatted the way you want it

    You’ve got that completely wrong.

Samsung’s current update policy is 4 years of updates from the android version that the device ships with and up to 5 years of security updates. This could (potentially) be less than 4 years if the device shipped with a version that had been out for a few months - this has happened before.

However your device does not fall under the new policy, and will only get 3 years of updates, both android and security. As mentioned above, Apple still support 7 year old devices with OS and security updates.

I doubt it. My guess is that it will go up about 5%.

  • Previous model iPhones don't drop very much, people still want them. Just buy the one that has the features you need. It will last a good 6 years, maybe 10, anyway. You will probably want the newer features and upgrade long before it is no longer supported or slows down.

Best value is to get a refurb that is 2-3 years old.

You can say it will last 6-10 years, but most people upgrade in 2-3, very few make it to 5 years
