SE Melbourne Doctor (Bulk Bill) Who Will Do Allergy Desensitisation Injections When Injection Is Expired

Hi All

Due to lockdowns and my previous doctor being in-person-germ phobic, I have a $500 box of allergy desensitisation injections that is now slightly (by days) expired.

I need a GP who will administer it in the SE suburbs who also bulk bills.

Suggestions?

Legally any GP wouldn't administer anything that has expired I would imagine. Their liability insurance would prevent such a thing.

… injections that is now slightly (by days) expired.

I don't think you're going to have much luck finding a GP who would be willing to inject you with expired medication.

    • There’s some chance they may not notice

    Best before or use by?

Yeah, just sniff it before injecting.

Is this the doctor equivalent of trying to find someone to do a dodgy road worthy on a busted arse car?

    DIY

Why was my comment inappropriate? Thousands of people administer their own insulin and other prescription and non-prescription legal injections everyday.
If this is a scheduled use product is it really that hard to say so?

With allergy desensitisation injections you need to have medical staff present with adrenaline ready in case it triggers a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Thanks. That’s actual useful information instead of just shutting down incorrect questions.

        • So hypothetically if one was to have adrenaline ready, would this be possible?

          • @dust: You would need someone to administer it

            • @Quantumcat: Outside an emergency department… not that would be best use of ED time.

@morse: Well let's say I sat in the waiting area of an ED and injected myself… Seems foolproof!

                @morse: This is OzB tho….

I didn’t actually know this was a thing. Had a look and that’s cool to know that there’s this option.

I would reach out to any friends or friends of friends you might know who are doctors, nurses or pharmacists.

    • I may have tried that…

I doubt any doctor will use expired products on you. Even if you provided the product and paid them

The most important thing is informed consent. Legally, a patient cannot give consent (even if they say yes and sign a form) for something the practitioner knows to be wrong/unsafe.

  • They might not notice tho. Worth a shot if they bulk bill and you really want to use it. I'd suggest a call around to the GP locations in your area to check re bulkbill. Ultra healthcare next to Southland used, as well as Highett medical on Nepean hwy. May not be the area of SE Melbourne that you're looking for tho.

  • Not medical advice but DIY. Its pretty easy to do. My dad it for years back in the day.
Buy these Needles 25G x 5/8" Vernacare Standard Orange 100s

Go into you deltoids subcutaneous region or even safer would be your butt cheek.

    Literally any doctor in Frankston

    • Hahaha

My nephew was interning at Frankston. He was leaving to go home one day and run across this guy, and his girlfriend, in the car park. The guy was bleeding profusely from the arm. My nephew found out this guy had taken a knife to cut a lemon for his beer and slipped going down the back steps. All I could think was “only in Frankston”.

      • The guy had a nice story, but we all know it likely the guy's girlfriend, guy's lover or girlfriend's lover that stabbed him lol.

  • Dr Kevorkian will do it.

  • Pharmacists can do it. So can your Immunologist. So can the Nurse at your local Medical Centre. The Pharmacist will check your identity against your name on the pack, to make sure it’s you. They will also double or triple check themselves, and then with you the amount (usually 0.5ml) to be injected.
Start by finding a Pharmacist who can do that.
I had absolutely no trouble having my monthly injections during the height of Covid. In fact the staff (I use a nurse at my medical centre) welcomed a healthy non-Covid patient they could have a conversation with!

      I certainly did.

  • You won’t find one. Certainly not one that’s not happy being sanctioned by AHPRA.

  • Lol just so it yourself it's intramuscular right?

    • Yeah, just intramuscular
