Best Value iPhone Upgrade from an XS

Hi all
I know "value" and "iphone" dont go well together, but just wondering what people are thinking is the best value upgrade from an XS. This is for my wife and she's been wanting to upgrade for the past 6 months (she thinks the XS is struggling a bit, i dont really know why though…..). I got that for her almost 2 years ago, second hand for around $600 but it was then swapped over by apple around 18 months ago after there was a screen issue.

I dont think she would be very keen to get one of the HUGE models (MAX?) and i assume the 11 range wouldnt be much of a step up, so maybe an iphone 12/12 Pro or 13/13 Pro? Just wondering if people think the extra money on a 13 is worth it, whether its better to go brand new or second hand/refurb is ok, or any other suggestions…..?

Thanks in advance

(btw, the screen on the XS got damaged - large scratches - after it was hilariously run over by my kids go kart and dragged along the bitumen road. Everything works fine, but it looks rough and im wondering if its worthwhile replacing the screen before selling it on, or just sell it as is. The official apple screen replacement is crazy expensive ($439) but it looks like i can get it done at places like MKC for $90)

maybe just wait till the 14 comes out. The 13 will go down and price and you will be able to make a better informed judgement then. Best of luck

iPhone 14 is being announced next Wednesday. I would wait and see and what happens then before decide on anything. Even if you weren't after the latest, the current 12 or 13 will drop in price too.

I think iPhones can be good value depending on your perspective of the word. My day 1 iPhone X is still my main daily driver and has been flawless since. I did change out the battery myself after 3 years reaching 80% capacity which was easy.

Finally considering an upgrade to 14, pending what gets announced. 5 year old iPhone X still worth $250-300 today.

    • I wasnt really sure if new models really affected older ones, particularly used/refurb prices. Obv new from apple pricing will drop…

  • Don't replace the screen, even if its in ordinary condition, as long as its not cracked, it shouldn't effect resale too much. Cheap replacements, such as the aforementioned $90 one, won't use a screen that is as good as the original Apple OLED and will most likely use an inferior LCD. Ive got a XS myself and its' alright, but storage and battery are becoming a pretty big issue so looking to upgrade shortly.

    • Oh really, hadn't thought about that they may replace the OLED with LED….may need to enquire……as you say though, may not affect the price thaaaaat much.

Wowza, Apple charge $439 for the XS screen replacement.

  • I upgraded from XS to 12 Pro Max and it was a huge jump in quality, the speed of the device felt night and day. The huge screen was nice. Felt no need to upgrade to the 13 and probably won't upgrade to the 14 either, I'll wait for the telescopic sense of the 15 next year.

Value for money, especially if the only problem is the XS being "slow", is the current SE. Same chipset as the iPhone 13, although the drop in screen size and going to the older style design might not be for her.

Otherwise wait for the new release and grab a 13, JB will generally do 10-15% off (then add in some discounted gift cards) and Telstra will clear them out in a Telstra Days special.

    • Yeah, hopefully a 13 can be had for less then the $995 that Telstra had.

    • The camera is a huuuge part of an upgrade and I don't think the SE would really add much. Part of the reason is was looking at a pro vs normal, but looking around, the iPhone 13 photos seem to be on par/better in some ways then a 12 pro so maybe I'll just looking for a 13 deal…

The new SE next week is probably going to be based on the XR/X/XS design.

      • The last one only came out 6 months ago, pretty unlikely there'll be a new one next week.

        • They could have released the last one to use up all the old shells they had and wear out all the machines they paid for to build the old style cases, and priced it so it'll sell out by the end of September. It is kind of embarrassing to still be selling an iPhone with those huge bezels too in 2022 while they are trying to compete with Samsung as having the world's best smartphones.

  • I have an Xs is still quite good. But thinking of upgrading when 14 comes out later next month.
