    This makes jaffles, not sandwiches

    • +4

In the U.S., the Tostwich is possibly the earliest toasted sandwich maker, dating back to before 1920. However, it was not patented until 3 March 1925 (applied for on 26 May 1924). It was invented by Charles Champion, whose other inventions include a corn-popping machine for the mass production of popcorn.[2]

The original Jaffle brand jaffle iron was designed and patented in 1949 by Dr Earnest Smithers, of Bondi, Australia.[1]

Funny - my parents grew up in 50's Sydney, I grew up in regional NSW. Neither my parents or anyone else I knew ever referred to the triangle-halves as a "jaffle". That was reserved for the round-shaped version you sometimes bought at a shop or carnival/fete. Homemade anywhere was the triangle-halves.

Same, round was Jaffle, square was brevelle in our house

My partner shared this with me, which may be of interest: https://lingroadshow.com/all-about-language/englishes-in-aus…

@dainese: Never knew about that - thanks for sharing!
I can remember having a laugh when relocating to Victoria many moons ago, being a potato "scollop" man I had to make a stop at Wodonga just to see if they suddenly changed to "cake" :D

In my opinion (and according to the pictures of the original jaffle iron), a jaffle is reserved for the full square/round version, not one that cuts into triangles. I have a 20 year old 'jaffle' maker and its the best. I repaired it when it broke, as its difficult to find a non-triangle one these days.

      • You could be right mate, my memory is the jaffle was mostly about the "uncut" feature, not the shape.

      • I ended up getting a Breville the Big One Toastie Maker. Makes them just like I remember from my childhood.

I’m looking for sandwich makers but this one is too big.

  • I have this and it is difficult to find bread slices big enough for it

    • LOL, this got me laughing

    • Isn't it standard size?
Or is this one larger than standard size?

I am looking for a sandwich press instead. Any recommendations on a good sandwich press?
    Thanks!

  • Need a deal on the DuraCeramic one. Edit: looks like it's available from Amazon DE; https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Breville-VST074X-DuraCeramic-Oper… Somehow free Prime shipping doesn't seem to work for this item.

    • Ah - what's special about this one?

      • +2

Free from 'forever chemicals' it looks like. The non stick on a sandwich press inevitably wears off over time - which means you are eating it. I would pay the extra for this one

    • It's sad Breville don't sell this line in Australia. Europeans are clearly more concerned about pfas/teflon than Australians. Even more options in the US.

Good lookin' sandwich press. But I looked at dimensions pic and briefly thought, Dude, you ate the wrong part bruh

  • Is this $59 on Amazon for anyone?
