M1max or Wait for M2 for 16 Inch MacBook Pro??

Hi Ozb team,

I'm confused and looking for advice because I can't decide. I've been a mac user since 2015 (still using my 2015 MBP till recently) but I now need to use windows based software for work. on my 2015 MBP, I had to split my 256gb hard disk and install windows, but that required upgrading my macOS which really slowed down my mac rendering it pretty useless.

I do a lot of my work from my laptop and having a fast laptop and consequent time saved (even seconds/ minutes saved will add up over time) is important to me. So after some deliberation and for future proofing, I bought a Macbook pro M1max 16inch laptop in October 2021 from good guys pro with a 15% off deal through vouchers. I didn't take into account that the laptop would be so delayed, and even though people buying directly from Apple received their laptops early, I've only just received the call to say my laptop has arrived.

I'm confused now:
1. should I go on with the M1 max paying prices (although on a good deal) for new tech even though it's about 10 months old now?
2. should I return it and get my money back and keep on using the shitty windows laptop that I'm using, which still gets the job done mostly? It's a work computer so I'll need my own in the next few months anyway.
3. should I wait for the M2 MBP (or M2 pro/max)? Not sure when Apple will announce these for the 16inch…
4. should I go for a good high end windows laptop instead, because I don't particularly need a mac and I need the windows OS. I changed to Mac in 2015 after years of frustration of windows PCs stuffing up, lagging, getting viruses etc and never regretted my decision to change to MBP as the reliability was just so much better with mac for me.

If I return the MBP, I will still end up with 4.5k of good guys vouchers that I have no other use for, apart from maybe buying another laptop - although the delays may end up being similar…

Any advice or insights are greatly appreciated :)

I hope you realise you can’t run Windows (boot camp or VMs) on Apple silicon without some jank solution. If you have requirement for Windows work apps, stick with a Windows laptop.

I've heard Parallels works quite well

Yeah, I heard that too. I purchased Parallels last week; it's so buggy and broken that I have no idea why people say "works quite well". In any case, it's slightly better than the VMware Tech Preview, which is also broken as hell.

In any case, even if you do manage some virtualisation to run Windows, it's just an ARM-based Windows, which, not only is it a preview itself, it also will struggle to run most Windows applications (other than the natively supported Windows applications like Edge of course).

        • Thanks for your insight into parallels b-t! My impression was that parallels does pretty well and is really fast. I’m also counting on windows for arm hopefully being available natively one day for Mac OS, so parallels is not required. Who knows when that will be!

  • Are you a graphic designer or something, looking to decrease render times on motion graphics, speed up workflows/previews? Why do you need the Max at all?

    • Don’t need the max. The softwares I use don’t take up a lot of memory actually. But max is a bit faster overall, and is more future proof. I was happy to pay the added 300-400$ to upgrade from pro to max

i'm not sure how you managed to get a lot of lag / viruses unless you are a novice, which would make sense as macbooks tend to be computers for people who don't like computers.

perhaps take a basic course in how to operate a computer, or ask a friend or family member to teach you, as you will have to be using windows anyway. if you have to use windows, get a good windows computer, no sense buying a mac.

  • Wait for M3, and get a red one. ;)

  • m2 brah

Usually…. iPhone event in Sept & Mac event in October. You may as well wait if you can.

  • Spec out what you need properly for home and work use.

You could also consider getting a work and personal laptop. I have a M1 Air base model which is sufficient for most personal use.
