Samsung Subscription Program . Is it a trap?

Hi Folks ,
Recent Samsung Australia has an option when purchasing a new phone , namely Samsung Subscription , with required monthly payment for 18 months , after 12 monthly of payment - you are entirely to upgrade a new smart phone for free . Thought?
I think it is a trap - for my case , ordering Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 1T version , with Samsung Subscription , required to pay $130/ month for 18 months . I think it is a trap as you are alway being drag in to a term of repayment of $130/m event when you swap for a new phone in the future .
What do you think ?

  • If you would have bought this phone at RRP anyway, then this looks like a good deal. Risk is if you break it before 12 months, but if you would have bought it at RRP and broke it at that price anyway then why not.

  • Just goes to show why people need to have the latest and greatest whilst paying top dollar on repayment plans

  • if you have to ask you already know the answer

None of these swap after 12 months are a good deal. Would it be a good deal to pay more than half of the cost of anything else to get a new one every 12 months? You're paying for massive depreciation.

    • I looked at the terms and conditions and it seems that you don't have to pay anything to upgrade for free at 12 months, and it doesn't extend your plan. 18 months times $130 is what this Fold 4 1TB costs on Google Shopping, so it seems like it the payment plan really is interest free and it really is a free upgrade. Unless I read the deal wrong..

I read deep into the T&Cs and at the time you upgrade the phone the 18 month subscription starts again calculated using the RRP of the new phone.

        • That's a shame they didn't include that in the T&C on the same page as the offer. So this is more like buy two phones at full price and save 16.5% on both phones. And if you change your mind and don't upgrade you save nothing. But it does say the Latitude fee is waived if this phone is the only thing on your Latitude account, so at least it really is interest and fee free right?

What is with your post formatting? Like why is there so many spaces?

    • I wasn’t sure if it was just because I haven’t had my coffee yet. But no, it’s just awfully formatted.

  • It's like those who want to lease a car and get to upgrade to a new model every 3 years.
Only thing is a car has many moving parts and servicing etc is all bundled in for convenience
with a phone, its literally a phone. Buy it outright, sell it second-hand when the time comes, get a new phone.

What happens if you break the phone, do you have to then buy it outright?

Wait for a sale, buy it then and it'll most likely work out cheaper (and you get to keep your phone)

    • What happens if you break the phone, do you have to then buy it outright?

The same issue faces OP even if he buys it outright at the start. The only new thing breaking the phone introduces, if he's on the subscription, is not being able to upgrade it if he chooses to. He gets to keep the device after 18 months, and if he upgrades after 12 months then he gets to keep the upgraded device after another 18 months.

The phone is $2,699, so at 12 months he would have paid $1566 off. If he upgrades then it's like Samsung paying him $783 for the phone.

Presumably a 12 month old $2,699 phone in good condition is worth more than $783, so it doesn't make sense to upgrade. But it might make sense to stick with the original 18 month offer. It avoids some inflation anyway. And if he wants to upgrade after 12 months anyway, then it might make sense to pay off the $780 upfront, sell the phone, then buy the new phone or start a new 18 month subscription.

I see on the Samsung website it says "Bonus $350 off⁵ the Galaxy Z series when you purchase with Samsung Subscription", which would bring the total cost down to $2,349.

      • Id still say the op is renting at pretty much full rrp though

  • If you're paying only the price of one phone but getting an upgrade included then of course it's worth it. I've never seen a plan like that though. Also keep in mind these plans are usually calculated using RRP, I don't think I've bought a phone at RRP.
