Car Damaged, Pink Slip and Rego due

TLDR; Car damaged in an accident, pink slip and rego due. Should I do pink slip before repair or after (even if rego might be ended by then)?

While on the M4, car was damaged by stuff that had fallen off a truck and could not be avoided. There is significant looking damage to the bumper and near the wheel but car operates as normal

Rego and pink slip is due in 12 days and from previous repairs, I estimate from the initial check to actual repair, it should take 1.5 weeks blowing through my rego deadline

If I get the pink slip now will the car automatically fail because of the damage? Is there a grace period after the rego expiry as that may be when I get the car back from the repairer?

  • Can you post some pictures of the damage? the pink slip doesn't look like cosmetic damage.

  • from previous repairs, I estimate from the initial check to actual repair, it should take 1.5 weeks

Is that taking into account longer waiting times for parts due to shipments being delayed?

You have 3 months from expiry to renew in NSW .
Obviously it is unregistered once past due date, so don't go driving without the relevant permits etc to complete pinkslip at a later date.

*nb your annual registration date remains the same.

    • I had the front grill and badge damaged on my Hyundai I30 Premium. Similar scenario to yours were there was debris on the M1, which was unavoidable. I did some checking and the grill looked like it was @ $1000. In the end I went through insurance as it was a Novated Lease, and the final bill was $2800. (The badge was $1400 because of the parking sensor etc.

go to a dodgy mechanic… give them 150 bux to look the other way. i dont suggest it but plenty out west of sydney that do that kind of job

Do you have a regular mechanic? Take it to then and ask if the damage needs to be repaired to pass a pink slip. Get a pink slip if you can.

If it won’t pass, get it repaired.

If the rego expires, you can only drive it directly to an inspection or for repairs, nothing else. The rego remains ‘valid’ but expired for another 3 months. After that you’ll need a blue slip and new registration.
