First Generation OLED TVs - Worthwhile Buying Used?

I see some sub $1k first generation OLED TVs ( circa 2015 models) for sale in the second hand market every now and then.

Should I entertain the idea of getting one or steer clear of them ?

Not often people sell TV's that arent rooted.

    YMMV

    • If it works fine and they upgrade, they move it to another room.

  • Older tech that's advanced considerably with higher risk of burn-in and potential issues. Not worth it.

  • Circa 2015 TV's are now basically landfill material

  • I bought an used Baunh 55" once. Lasted me for 3 years but never again. New or nothing!

If it doesn't have true HDR (and not just a "HDR" logo on the box) then it's not worth it, unless someone is basically giving it away and it has a good enough picture. Or if someone has a really high end TV from 2015 for a song, then yeah of course take it off their hands, those old luxury TVs are still pretty great. People tend to not give away $7,000 TVs though even if they are seven years old. If the picture still looks very good then why would they want to give it to a stranger?

  • Depends on the situation. Rarely someone would want to getrid of a 5-6 year old oled because of a valid reason like moving overseas etc. might be worth checking the details and decide.

  • I rather buy a non-OLED modern day tv for less than $1k. It will probably outperform those 1st gen OLED with warranty.

Technology has changed so much since 2015

Does that mean I should throw out my original (multi thousand dollar) curved 65"TV?
    Why?

It works well, and a brand new TV won't change the dribble that's on TV in between the (loud) adverts anyway!

  • I did mention “every now and then” … usually they are going overseas.

But as people have mentioned an old TV is old tech (which is also what the voting results show)

I forgot to mention I want to spend <$1k cause I have young kids so
    1. 90% of content is theirs
    2. There is a high probability a projectile will end up meeting with the TV. Hasn’t on my 55” but u know 77” OLED C2 = Murphy Law
    3. I want a big screen 75” …. Which leaves me with either second hand / cheap cheap brands until kids can guarantee said projectile will NOT meet up with TV :)

Alternatively I can get a C1 48” for the bedroom

  • Most likely not but if it doesn't have burn-in and it supports 3D then it might be worth a shot.

  • Update (but the vote tally says it all I guess)

Was going to wait for Black Friday sales to see what that brings but a 75” TCL P715 came up locally for $500 … so why not #shrug

Nothing wrong with it … buyer wanted a 120hz for his Xbox. Gotta do what u gotta do I guess :)

    Thanks for everyone’s feedback
