Nasi Lemak for $10 @ PappaRich

1761

$10 nasi lemak to celebrate Malaysia independence day. Not as good as previous deal of $2 or $5 nasi Lemak, probably due to the inflation. From the sign looks like it is available whole day for all Paparich stores until 31 Aug. Dine in only.

You can choose between:

  • Fried Chicken
  • Curry Chicken
  • Vegetarian Mutton

I used to visit a small but authentic Malaysian restaurant called Khesyaan kitchen where they had authentic Nasi Lemak for $4.50 without meat. Unfortunately they have closed it during the pandemic. But looks like they are going to open it again soon.

they have banana leaf rice, i reached out to them on FB and they said they are renovating…

      • yeah, if you like banana leaf flavour, you can buy in bulk in Asain supermarkets/green grocers to make it at home.
you need to heat the banana leaf for a little and make a rice packet with other vegetables/meat, then keep it for a while to get the flavour infused to the rice itself.

        • fk that, making 500 different types of curries lmao, sounds like a chore. I think it would make sense if you live in a big family, but as someone living alone… cooking at home sometimes is not worth it when i venture out of my comfort zone (efforts and money wise).

Also, good news! they are opening TODAY (31st of August) at Huntingdale.

  • 'Sold Out' at Papparich Castle Hill today when I went to it at 6:12PM.

    • -1

Lol did you pay in advance and then they ran out?…

    • +2

Castle Hill were ‘sold out’ again today at around 2PM :(

    • i posted the T&C before cause this happened in previous years and someone negged me for it lol

  • +1

That's not a bargain. Papa Rich food is mediocre. Service is haphazard. There is a friendly mamak store in Springvale.

    • What’s the name of the one in Springvale?

      • +3

        Friendly Mamak Store?

      • +1

Warung mummy I think. Unless there is more than one in Springvale.

    • +1

Tell me where I can find better value working in the CBD today?

  • -1

Paparich Nasi Lemak is just horrible and so distinct from real Nasi Lemak is not funny.

  • Even Malaysians dont want to eat there…

    • +1

This doesn't make sense, wouldn't Malaysians be pickiest eater of their own cuisine?

      • +4

Not sure about pickiest but probably the most stingy from experience

        • -3

stingy? malaysians? what kind of dodgy malaysians have you been hanging with? malaysians the type of people to physically fight each other over bills bro

          • +1

@dukeGR4: They come in all sorts but I never crossed paths with those you spoke of just only kiasus

            • -2

@Poor Ass: all Asians are kiasus by nature lol, but just because they are kiasus does not mean they are stingy.

Also what does being "Stingy" have anything to do with being a picky eater? And what does discussion about their alleged "stinginess" have anything to do with their kiasuness? You're just going out of your own way to put down Malaysians

              • +1

@dukeGR4: ok ok fine you're stingy and very kiasu you happy now?

              • @dukeGR4: Literally every Malaysian I know is a stingy tightarse and a shit friend. I used to work for a massive building company and we had a big internal review on the jobs that somehow weren't making us any money and we found the vast majority of customers we make no profits on turned out to have a Malaysian name. So OP is pretty bang on the mark.

  • Me is nasi lemak snob. Can't stand mushy overcooked rice. Nasi lemak house - I am looking at you.

In Vic, these places pass the snob test.

    Terry's kitchen (yes it's in a church)
Malaysian kampung restaurant (best nasi kandar in Melb. Downside is limited options)
    Ccwok
    Selera hawker food

    • -1

Terry's Kitchen best if you stick to Nasi Kerabu everything else is medicore. Never tried Nasi Lemak should be decent.

Tried their Kolok Mee, Loh Shu Fan, Sarawakian Laksa, curry puff, siew pao etc, i would rate 5/10 for all of them.

MKR is good, but god do i hate dining there…

      • Depends on whether one likes to smell like rempah. I only ever get take away at MKR and still end up smelling like the ayam merah I ordered.

Never tried other dishes at Terry's. Only eat the nasi lemak or blue pea rice.

I have my eye Khesyaan someone recommended above. I have been looking for basic nasi lemak I can buy on a sat morning for a long time.

    Paparich is crap.
Standards fine down the shitter long ago by take the Knox City store for example. Tried once and never again. By the time I walked past there the second time it was shut floor good.

    Overpriced and small portion.

These days heaps better choices out there for Malaysian food in Melbourne

    • +1

Yeah I defintely feel like the portion sizes have gone down by a loooot.

  • Nasi lemak was quite nice at World Square Sydney.

    • Did they serve the same quantity as full priced meal?

      • Yes.

Generous portions for it being $10.

        Usual price is $17.50

  • +1

If someone is after Nonya cuisine in VIC, maybe try Madam Kwong/s in Box Hill. They are open for lunch only. It is a tiny place but good food. Not been back there after pandemic. Looks like now open only Friday to Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. Probably best to go early if you want to get what you are after.

    • +1

      Seconded. Really good.

    • Closed down long time ago.

    • +1

      it's Nyonya**

    • I rate their food 6.5 out of 10, not something they used to be…(10 years ago)

  • Super salty, the food is only good with beer

  • +3

Just popped into Southern Cross MELB Pappa Rich and despite all the negative comments above, best tasty and most filling $10 lunch one could find 👍

Got about five pieces of tender curried chicken, brilliant.

    • +1

Is that cheese tart place still open inside of it? They were amazing.

      • +1

They are! Yet I've never tried…. sounds like my next week's treat is booked in

        • Oh man you'll love them. Please report back and let me know what you think =)

  • Can anyone confirm that this deal is also valid for dinner?

    • Yes, dine in only. Valid for the entire day from 29 to 31st Aug

  • +1

Just enjoyed it from the Adelaide store. $10 lunch well spent. Did the curried chicken one. I enjoyed the sambal better than Nanyang.

  • Had the curry in Brisbane CBD. For $10 can't really go wrong, it was quite delicious.

    • How did it compare with Lemak?

  • +1

Sold out Macquarie park 5.30pm today. You’d think they would order enough food for the promotion.

  • +1

sold out when i went to wynyard at 7:30pm

  • -1

Malaysia's "Independence Day". LOL. I hate it when Malaysians and Malaysian establishments can't even get their history right.

  • +2

Went to macquarie park and they'd sold out. They didn't specify which nasi lemak so it wasnt "we're sold out of a type of meat". They'd sold out of the base ingredients for nasi lemak. Really? You've sold out of rice, anchovy, sambal and cucumber?? What a scam. Well done papparich, your little bait and switch just lost you a loyal customer.

  • +1

hmm The one i can go to is Macquarie Park but sounds like it gets sold out all the time? I stopped going as their food is just microwaved food, the rice even comes in the shape of a takeaway container.

Judging by the comments of being sold out before even dinner, it sounds like maybe some stores are doing a bait and switch tactic, get people in because once you are in and seated, you arent going leave after going to all the trouble of going there.

    • +1

They haven't tried that trick on me. I'd walk right out the door, and even announce it to their customers that they sold out.

      • I wish i could say the same but i think if i rocked up with friends. We would fall for it and end up eating because we would be worried about the time waste looking for another place to eat. But definitely i think what you said is the thing to do, have to teach these places not to do this kind of thing.

  • +2

Sold out in Brisbane CBD today as well :(

Was told they only do 25 of each of the specials (not sure if just that store or all stores).

    • wow what a joke, lucky i didnt even try to go yet to mac park, probably sold out by now.

    • Garden City store had run out earlier today of chicken for curried chicken. Manager took my number & sent SMS when supplies arrived. Fried chicken or vegetarian was available.
Grabbed a tasty big serve of curried chicken at Coorparoo instead.
No limit on number served per day at those stores.
