Should I Get an Electric Kettle, or a benchtop Hot Water Dispenser/Boiler/Urn?

Comparatively I want to know your experiences in the usages / pro / cons of these devices so to make an informed decision.

    Yes.

just go for the kettle, if you don't need boiling, just use the hot tap

    • this got me thinking.. what use is a boil/kettle, when there's a hot water tank/tap then?

Speaking from experience as one of the OzBargain peasant proletariat: the difference between boiling water and "as hot as the tap will go" is the difference between heating my cup noodles into something almost edible vs getting a cup of lukewarm half-heated noodle bricks.

If you're asking whether you should get one of the two (because you have neither) then yes, they're unbelievably useful. I legit can't imagine how people over in the US and other countries function without having invented the convenience of an electric kettle yet, that seems medieval to me at this point.

If you're asking comparatively whether you should get the electric kettle or the benchtop Hot Water dispenser, then that would depend on what dispensers you were looking for. I can only imagine that the electric kettle (of pretty much any brand) is going to beat a dispenser on price any day of the week, so given the forum we're on my vote also goes to the kettle in that case too.

      The latter yup.

{Also, seems like mixed info out there about the USA and elec kettles
      this one said they drink more coffee than tea}

It's a technology thing too, the US's lower voltage means they'd be waiting almost twice as long for an electric kettle to boil water over there, so it hasn't really come into vogue the way it has here.

they are probably just used to stovetop kettles

i've thought about getting one for going camping and using at home, we've had to replace 1 - 2 kettles, which i doubt we'd have to do with what is essentially just a steel pot, and for the added nostalgia of hearing the whistle when it boils

          • @[Deactivated]: for home, i definitely go electric for the safety/auto shut-off

            • @capslock janitor: i don't leave the kettle unattended (stand there waiting for it to boil) so that isn't a concern for me

        • That plus the energy cost. If they've got a gas stove, would be cheaper (potentially significantly) to heat the water using gas rather than electrciity.

  • A Nespresso machine will give you hot water. You may have to get it through the cleaning mode though (for machines that require a barcode to know how much water to dispense), which means waiting two minutes to heat up then it'll continuously give you hot water until you press a button to turn it off, so your mug could overfill if you start the process and get distracted.

We have a 1.7L electric kettle. I boil water and transfer to a thermos and we find it stays hot for coffee/tea for about 24 hours. If we drink a lot during the day we just top it up with fresh boiling water. We also have a 3L electric urn that we use when we stay with friends / relatives for a few days at a holiday house. It is plugged in and keeps the water very hot continuously. The downside with the urn is that because it is always on, it uses more electricity than the electric kettle. So it depends on use case, how many people, how often it is used.

  • How y'all feel about em collapsible Silicone kettle for daily use?
(Without size being an issue for us, preferring compact/smaller capacities.)
