Nvidia pricing seems to be slowly balancing to Amd pricing, except in the low end :(

  • +30

Nah everyone buy so that the next gen isn't sold out for me😂

    • +2

Yeah and they aren't even going to start selling the 4080 and 4070 until they sell enough of the backlog of these chips.

      • +19

That depends on when AMD release thier cards.

        • +1

rumors are some of the Nvidia next gen are already in production but they may delay release to dump stock.

          • +1

@gromit: I thought Nvidia already announced that they're delaying the releases?

            • +3

@Vanceer: On 20th September at the GTC, 4000 series is going to be announced, October release most likely for 4090 and maybe 4080 while the rest get delayed till next year.

Typically Nvidia would've done the announcement by now and had a September release so it's a month off.

        • -6

Those with $500 budget should aim for 3060 or 3060 Ti instead of 3080 or even 4080.

Keep posting HODL comments will not make the price drop further.

      • how many backlog do you think they will have from the shortages of the last few years?

        • +2

NVIDIA inventory for the quarter ending July 31, 2022 was $3.163B, a 58.79% increase year-over-year.

  • +2

ppl still posting these as if 999 is a good price lol.. 2 months from now you can get this performance or more in a RX7700 for likely 600-700 price range

    • +1

      here is your answer.
      different card, same analogy

    • +4

      Will there be stock?

I remember before the RTX3000 series came out people were crapping on deals like $450 for a 2060 because you'd apparently be able to get much better performance for the same price. Well look how that turned out, no stock for months and then when there was, the prices were through the roof and a $450 2060 Super looked like deal of the century

      • +11

It's misplaced to compare, frankly anything in the PC hardware space, to what happened with the launch of the 3000/6000 series of GPUs. That was a coming together of so many factors to create those market conditions, and short of a new, deadlier pandemic and associated lockdowns (combined with high crypto prices and a continuing of Proof of Work on popular coins), we will see a temporary shortage at launch (2 weeks to 2 months) for the new cards, then business as usual.

I mean, how many people who spent up big on the last gen are going to be keen to spend again straight away on Lovelace/RDNA3? The pent up demand isn't zero, but imagining we'll be back in a place where 2060s sell for their RRP from 2018 ala the 10xx series in 2020, it's just not going to happen

        • +1

everything we know about 4000/7000 is rumors, its difficult to predict the future, Anything can happen

          • @Pugkin: Exactly. It won't be as bad as last time, but there will still likely be sites crashing and cards selling out quickly at launch or maybe nobody will buy them due to high cost of living and retailers will be slashing prices just to move them. Who knows? Time will tell

          • -2

@Pugkin: We're not exactly 100% guessing here now though. plenty of reviewers and testers have 7000/4000 series cards and are benching them. even if the early bench scores are 50% inflated, we're still looking at a decent 20% uplift

            • +1

@Doomedgrind: No reviewer has next gen gpus at this point in time, 4000 series announcement alone is still a month away…

              • -1

@JerraJones: so… you work for AMD or nvidia? if they're launching in just 4 weeks, you betcha there are high level testers that have them in hands

      • Not every day we have a pandemic that makes fat people fight over bog rolls in the supermarket. Im holding for 5 series

      • +1

It's called "cause and effect" not magic. Reason last gen was so expensive was due to crypto.

They can try all the "silicon shortages" they want this time. Fact is there's no demand

      • That was an exception not the rule

    • +5

$1k for a two year old card is nuts

    • +1

I think you're being optimistic about the release date for next gen gpus, especially since the 7700/4070 always release later on.

    • With more VRAM too but, I think the price will be closer to $750 for good AIB models, still, agree with you, the 3080 finally being the price it should have always been, 2 years after launch, hmm, nah. If I miss out on 40 series, then I'd just go used instead of buying new now I think.

  • +9

    $500 we have a deal

    • -2

Even that would have been steep for this tier of card, this late in it's life, for most of the time GPUs have existed.

The pricey GTX 980's MSRP was a whopping 549 USD at launch, but it wasn't selling anywhere near that high when it was years old and months from being replaced (like the 3080 is).

      • +3

Yeah the GTX 4080 launch is only a couple of months away.

There are OzBargain posts for GTX 980s at the same age (a few months before the GTX 1080 release) for around $500 AUD.

And at the time the GTX 900 series was considered crazy expensive, a huge jump in price compared to the GTX 780, 680, 580, etc.

So $500 isn't some kind of stingey lowball offer, it's the normal price this card would be selling for if there had been no Great GPU Shortage.

        • +3

No way the 4080 is coming out this year.

        • Inflation?

  • Their prices are high becuase of mining. Nvidia hashrate is high than amd. So nvdia is more focused on mining profits. Not for gamers.

    • +1

Mining is nearly dead. Ethereum is removing it from that blockchain.

      • -4

Miners will mine other coins next month.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oys26TCgD1o

        • +3

No they wont. The scam is over.

        • +1

lol and people with EA Falcons will still buy parts from autobarn. These basement investors are stuck with too many gpus

          • +2

@Jimmy77: Poor Autobarn getting thrown under the bus in a GPU discussion :P

        • -1

Mining certainly wont die, it's the basement mining operations which will whither as mining is taken over by larger groups.

  • Still way too high. This needs to come down fast.

  • +9

I think at this point I'd be waiting for the Nvidia announcement of their intention to announce 1 or 2 of their new cards in future - in case they implement sane MSRPs to clear out stock. $999 is still too much for the 10G 3080 third tier card.

  • +7

10g 3080 should be 799 by end of September I think

    • -4

      dreaming

    • Sounds reasonable that it would drop to this price but unsure when

    • The endpoint is a 3080 is equivalent to a 4060 (ish). Thus we are looking at an endpoint of AU$580 by H1 next year.

Given that they will attempt to slot in a 4090 as the flagship in Oct for as much as they think they can get away with, the 3xxx lineup will have to adjust slightly. If they try for AU$3000 for the 4090 initially, my guess is the 3090 will be at half that or less - AU$1499 - next month. That puts the 10G 3080 around the $900-$1000 mark. Pricing will fall from there, with the NVidia aim being to sell out the 3xxx chips, rather than reducing prices fast. Then, when they have sold out those, they are free to launch the mid range 4xxx chips.

The only thing that will speed NVidia is stiff competition from AMD. If, in Nov, AMD comes out with a full line-up of competitive chips, then NVidia will be forced into a faster reduction in price. However greed will probably win out till next year on the duopoly.

      • 10gb is limiting for 3080, it's a card that will not age well. I could probably agree that 12gb version will be $900 or a bit lower, but 10gb should be lower than that.

  • +15

Spend the extra 100 on 12gb if you must buy one now

  • +9

Remember when the 3000 series was announced and gumtree was full of "lolrip I will give you $750 for your 2080 ti because 3070 has teh same performance". Moments after launch day that didn't age well. Point being, I very much doubt the new launch is going to herald some era of price friendly GPUs.

    • +1

Ebay still expects a lot for 20 series, and if you dare bid a reasonable price they will decline

      • +6

You have to add 15% to what you would expect to pay to cover the eBay fees. It's the most expensive place for 2nd hand goods.

        • nah mate cashies

    • +2

At least the 3xxx series was a decent improvement over the 2xxx series .
When the 2xxx series was released it was a much smaller improvement with a large increase in price and it was still sold out everywhere .
The 4xxx series will be a large increase in performance and doubtful that it will get much of a price hike .

      • well 4xxx might end up not being a large increase, best to actually see once it releases, but im not gonna wait another year for a 4060 just to get 15% performance increase

      • +2

doubtful that it will get much of a price hike

We're in an global inflationary period. What makes you think Nvidia and AMD are immune to increasing prices?

        • +1

Graphics cards are not essentials like power and food , Inflation will lessen peoples toy budgets and without Crypto booming the price ceiling for GPU's has fallen substantially already . Old inventory is accumulating and new cards are in bound .
I don't doubt RRP will increase , I just don't think by much and I think they will sell for less than RRP within a couple of months of release as is the usual scenario .

          • @troyww: What do you think now? :)

            • @Bluto Mindpretzel: Surprised LOL .
Surely it's a ploy to offload their vast amount of inventory .
AMD are killing them now . The new RRP's are suicide .

              • @troyww: I agree, AMD all the way now.

                • @Bluto Mindpretzel: After seeing the prices I picked up a S/H 6800Xt for 700 yesterday . 6 months old with local receipt and looks like new . I can't be bothered to HODL any longer and it's getting to be a game of russian roulette (Not sure if thats taken on a different meaning in the current state of events ).
I bought my sons 6700xt a couple of months ago for $600 as it was his birthday that kind of hurt but his 3gb 1060 wasn't enough for his Quest.
Sure I'd prefer Nvidia but I don't even really know why anymore .

                  • @troyww: Yeah that is fair. AMD are being far more open with their technologies, I cannot believe DLSS3 really requires a 4000 series. It's nuts.

                    • @Bluto Mindpretzel: I missed that little morsel , That just adds to the gimping of next gen chips to squeeze every last cent at every price point .

    • The RTX3000 series did bring in good RRP prices, but good luck getting them for the first 2 years. I ordered the night they went on sale, sites were dying all over the shop, finally got an order in a couple of hours later, had to wait 3 months to get it and I was one of the lucky ones.

      • Purely depended on which model and retailer you ordered at, i got mine in December and they didn't make me change / pay extra (thank you PLE)

    • +1

I think that was unfortunate timing with the crypto boom and Covid induced chip shortage. But yep I remember reading hardware swap/sell on reddit where people were selling 2080tis for $600 usd lol.

      • And this time around there will likely be larger surplus's of S/H cards .

    • +1

Yeah, everyone seems think we're magically going to go back to 10 series prices. The 4090 is gonna be $2500 card and will still sell even without the crypto boys

  • +1

they making room for the 4090 launch. absolutely hold if you dont need it.

I switched to console when shit started getting out of hand and havent looked back :)

    • +1

I'm seriously considering getting a series X and calling it a day.

      • +4

Yeah the consoles made so much more sense this generation.

      • +2

Nah man get a PS5, better games

    • -4

yknow the top of the line a long time ago was also a much weaker card to what we have today?

    • +2

I remember when the flagship GPU was closer to $500.

The Canopus Voodoo 1 with the extra VRAM was about $450 I think, but plenty of generations since then it was around 5 or 6 hundred. I think it wasn't until the 7 series or even 9 series with the Titans when $1000 cards became a thing outside of a few extreme vanity versions.

    • +1

I bought a Fury X back in 2015 costing about $1000. It still performs at about a 6500xt /1650 Super performance. You can still get 60fps in modern titles at 1080p. Getting a 3080 would reasonably lead to 4-6 years life unless you are chasing the 4k, raytracing, HDR and max settings but if you are willing to settle for a console, then you can settle without all those features and turn graphics down to prolong life on the card.

    • turn in ur pc master race card immedietely

If it bleeds we can kill it…
    Oh HoDL

  • +5

I'm not going to pay 1k for this card. I am holding..

    • -7

yes you will when 4080 selling at $1500.

Inflation means people have too much money on their pocket, and companies know it.

At the end the consumer will give in as they cannot live forever without niche products.

      • I feel your pain, LOL

        • -7

its your pain not mine. I'm not the one without a gpu LOL.

Don't pay anything over $1500 for the top end card otherwise get a 2nd hand 1080ti / 2080ti or cheap 3000 series when all the guys who like to pay 3 x the normal amount for an overpriced card ditch there cards for peanuts

how does it feel unable to enjoy the latest and greatest GPU? must be a load of butthurt.

          • @[Deactivated]: It's a luxury item lol. I enjoyed gaming with a 970 and the 6600xt is even nicer. Like I've tried explaining to you before all the current gimmicks are bullshit, this is merely one era of gaming. As bad as 60hz is it was perfectly fine for everyone when we jumped from crt to lcd oin the early 00's. Only since 2015 has 60hz become an issue. Back then everybody happily scrapped their 120hz monitors. The 1440p/4k high refresh nonsense is merely another gimmick/stepping stone in gaming. There will always be a latest and greatest gpu. I remember when Doom 3 was supposedly the future. 8 shaders! Also factor is csgo/GTA ps2 are better games than cyberpunk

Video gaming in general just isn't that great lol, it's easy and convenient. I only gamed for 50 or so hours between 2012-2019. If a gpu is too expensive I'll just renovate, go fishing or buy a project car.
