Sometimes a deal is just getting something you would like at a price you are willing to pay. For me this was a deal. The girl at the register was all excited and started carrying on. My daughter had no idea that I had slipped something more unusual than my usual unusual into the basket. She is mortified by the thought that she will be eating truffle butter, truffle eggs and truffle potatoes (and that is just before I start thinking about it) for the next week or so.
Kakulas Sisters have single black truffles for $24.50. It is truffle season. When the season is over, these will be gone. The truffles are not weighed and are individually packaged in vacuum packed plastic. I am going to research how to store mine. A little will go a long long way, so this will last, if I take care of it. The girl at the register said wrap it in damp towels in the fridge, but over the w/e, I will be researching this. When I think about how far this will stretch and how special the resulting dishes will be, I am more convinced it is exceptional value. I am sure it is well over $700 kg. If you are feeling like economising, supplement your dishes with truffle oil. Just be very very careful, it is powerful stuff. In the wrong hands it can be dangerous.
They also had bulk pinenuts from china for $34 a kilo, ground cinnamon for $8.50 a kg, Australian Pecorino for $20 a kilo.
Sounds like you got quite a bargain there.
Tasmanian truffles from Perigord are not quite yet available, but when they are ready, will cost $3000/kg.
The smallest amount you can buy, 50g, will set you back $150.
