Shower caddies that don't rust?

I've recently been looking at shower caddies, as the one we have is too small and is a bit rusty, but it got me thinking about all those "rust proof" claims that are thrown around. This is our second one, the first one was just a bog standard stainless steel caddy which ended up rusting, so this time we got a stainless steel (or non stainless, don't know) one coated in some kind of rubbery material, presumably to protect against rust, but that still somehow ended up rusting.

I just bought an aluminium one for much more than I'd like, but it looked like the perfect fit, I don't trust the suction cup versions and it's not my house so I don't want to stick some permanent adhesive thing to the wall, which may not last anyway, so I had to get one that fits over the top of the glass screen. I'm hoping that it lasts, and after looking through all the reviews I could find of the product, it seemed that there weren't any bad reviews, then I was looking after I had already purchased it and I found a bad one on amazon, complaining that it broke (my main concern with aluminium).

What kind of shower caddy do you use, if any? has it rusted?

    Plastic with suction cups

    • you don't have issues with it falling down?

      • +1

Nope! I don’t think I’ll be able to remove it without breaking it

      • The ones that screw are usually quite good. We have a mirror from Ikea, that is quite strong.

Have one of these, has worked well for 6+ months so far. Admittedly not cheap

    • few reviews complaining about rust on that one..

      • It has a 10 year anti-rust warranty.

        • +2

Which is great if the company still exists in 10 years, the product is still being made, you still have your receipt, still care and have the time to follow up, and the company doesn't argue that the rust is a result of user error or otherwise won't honour the warranty due to something in the small print.

Most of the time warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on as for most people the effort to claim is both too significant and the value too low to bother. Even if you do try to claim you'll be accepting a slightly newer version of the same faulty product that failed the first time around.

If reviews of this product, photo evidence attached, say that it rusts, it rusts. Save your time and energy and buy a product that doesn't rather than waiting for the warranty faeries to come through for you.

@AngoraFish: It's from Bunnings. The first ones I bought did have rust issues, and the plastic hooks broke. Took them back to Bunnings, they replaced them on the spot. Happened again, replaced them again, they have now updated the product, no rusting, no plastic hooks to break.

            • +1

@brendanm: So the cost of this item to you has been, to date, three round trips to Bunnings, a bunch of time and hassle and a replacement that may or may not last a bit longer now given that the company is still tinkering with their design and has an established track record of making false claims about their product.

I'll give you this, you're a more patient and forgiving man than me, that's for sure.

              • +1

@AngoraFish: I go to Bunnings for other things, and took it along. I've had the current ones for years now, zero issues. There is nothing else similar, otherwise I would have changed to something else.

          • @AngoraFish:

If reviews of this product, photo evidence attached, say that it rusts, it rusts.

7 reviews are that definitive for you huh? Compared to the number of these that they would sell

            • @spackbace: You think they might be Photoshopped? Seems a lot of work to go to for… what? Most people don't leave reviews full stop, and rust is rust. But hell, you want to purchase a stack of these to give away to your friends at Christmas I'm certainly not here to stop you.

              • @AngoraFish: Did I say they were fake? No, I pointed out only 7 bad reviews

Most people don't leave reviews full stop

Yep, people are more prone to leave a negative review than a positive one…

                • @spackbace: I'm really not clear what point you're trying to make. That only 7 people's product rusted within the 10 year warranty period?

I'm genuinely curious to know what percentage of prematurely rusting product might reasonably be acceptable to you, or perhaps more importantly, what percentage might be acceptable to OP given that the entire point of this thread is to find a shower caddy that doesn't rust.

Before we go there, however, let's also add into the mix @brendanm 's hearty recommendation based on a premature failure rate to date of 2 out of 3 product samples.

But hey, I get that you love your caddy. It's great that you've found a product that suits your needs and that hasn't yet rusted after 6 months of use. The rest of this thread relates entirely to whether it's reasonable to rely on a 10 year warranty for that same product. really? never drop off from the wall? the suction last for that long ? i remember one time long ago using some other cheapo, it dropped to the floor at like 1am, scared me to death

This ones suction cups, have the grip of a thousand Vikings.

    • Use a couple of these and they do the job. I think the suction cup has come loose once over the last year. Have 2x 1L pump action shampoo/conditioner bottles sitting in it. When using the pump I take care not to push down on the caddy. If the pump has resistance and you push down on the caddy with more force, I can see these falling off more frequently.

    3M shower caddy.

    • +2

Got one of these 2 years ago - no complaints.

      • Same, have had for over four years and zero problems. A bit pricey to begin with but it will never rust or fall off as it sits over the shower screen. Also holds large Pantene bottles and is easily cleaned. Also note it’s made from Acrylic not plastic.

I have this very caddy - it rusted within 6 months, and you can definitely see it!

The "fusion-loc" ones from Bunnings are good, they are suction cup as well, but hidden, mine have been holding for years.

    Use plastic.

Stainless steel WILL rust if left wet. It's "rust free" when dry and exposed to air.

    • i looked for plastic, but i couldn't find any that fit over the shower screen like this i could only find plastic ones that used suction cups, which i've had bad luck with in the past.

        • unfortunately it won't work on our shower head, i need the kind that fit over the glass screen

edit nevermind.. saw the 4th picture

Try Howard's Storage World. Loads of aluminium and plastic products for the whole house. Not the cheapest, but generally good quality, and you can shop around for some of the same brands in other stores.

They have over screen hooks for showers, too for squeegies.

          www.hws.com.au

      • You need an acrylic one, like the Aldi over shower screen one listed above. No suction cups required.

Take a magnet along when buying one to make sure it is not magnetic. This would indicate proper stainless steel.

Tiny bit of rust early. Scrubbed that off and it’s been good for several years.

Coated. As in like a thick colour coating. It's the best way to go imo

Seriously, has OZB come to this?

    Acrylic.

Glass haven't had a problem in 10 years. I just have the 2 clip with the 1/4 round shelf.

    • might not work so well in ours.. our shower is very small and i bump into things already, i would probably knock it all over lol

wish i had a bigger shower

  • +2

I don't have it, but Aldi sell a hang over the shower screen plastic/acrylic one.

    • wish we had aldi :(

  • +1

i just stick everything in the corner of the shower on the floor

    • ours is very small and has a raised lip around the edge that isn't wide enough for anything, stuff put on the edge tends to fall over when you turn the water on. there is only really enough room to stand lol

This one claims to be plastic and silicon. Never used it but might be worth wandering down to Howard’s to look.

We've had this one in our main (used daily) shower for at least two years and no signs of rust yet: https://www.bunnings.com.au/evolve-lifewares-aluminium-rust-…

I'm a big fan of over-the-glass caddies; they seem much more space efficient than other types.

    • that is very similar to the one i purchased, unfortunately it was on catch and not amazon so i can't cancel (that one is 20 dollars cheaper), but both are made of aluminium so they should not rust.

me too. i just don't trust suction cups to hold, i've always had bad luck with them
