Canon EOS 60D or Nikon D90?

Need some advice on brands…

Taking into consideration Nikon's fall in price in Australia (the dude at JB's said that), should I go Canon or Nikon? (Oh, and the dude at JB's has Canon but with price drop wishes he had Nikon…)
-price?
-quality?
-warranty?
-ease of use?
-features?

I found this comparison:

Cheers :)

  • I had the D90 awesome camera, now have the D7000 - also amazing camera.

first question you need to ask is 'what lenses will i be buying?'

2nd would be 'what flashes and other accessories?'

eg. canon seem to make cheaper f4 and f2.8 lenses so if you want these, you buy canon

Take a look around, most professional photographers use Canon. I await the flaming..

thats awesome if you're a professional

what if you're a noob like the OP?

      your comment means nothing lol.

I went with Canon purely because most people I know have them for support/swapping equipment. Something to consider.

Canon are more popular. But Nikon is better.

  • I got a Canon 60D about 2 weeks ago, for $1280. You can probably use that as a price benchmark? Was at Myer - 20% off.

    • I assume that was with a lense? With the standard lense you can get grey import (same model) for under $1000.

      • twin lens kit. 18-55mm and 55-250mm.

  • confused as to why you are comparing cameras on different levels, you should be comparing d7000 vd 60d

Probably because the D7000 is more expensive than the 60D but the D90 is about the same price (D90's been superceeded by the D7000 but should still be competitive with the 60D in terms of quality)

      Edit:
On a purely statistical point of view the D90 > 60D
But in a practicality and real world situation where flexibility is needed the 60D > D90. Major points here is longer battery life, external microphone jack, more cross focus type AF, faster shutter speed and fps, and better ISO. The slightly better image quality, smaller and lighter form factor and what not that the Nikon win at are not really that much different or significant for someone new to a DSLR. Oh and with the Canon's cheaper entry level optics!

The D7000 against the D60 however is a completely different story. The D7000 wins here hands down. (But then with the D7000 that's competing more with the Canon 7D)

      • thanks for that…. so are u saying that nikon still may cost more overall? gotta go the canon then.

        • Not only will it cost more upfront for a similar kit (IIRC the D7000 is about $100 more than the Canon). Nikon branded lenses are more expensive than their Canon equivalent and hence going the Nikon route will cost more overall as you're locking yourself into a more expensive platform. However if you decide that you do not need Nikon/Canon branded lenses and are willing to go third party then ongoing costs will be the same regardless of which brand you chose other than the initial outlay for the body/kit.
