ENGWE GT5 Folding Electric E-Bike $799 (RRP $999) Delivered @ PCMarket

131

I got this e-bike and I love it. Good power and battery size for the price.

Please note that this is terrible as an actual bike. There are no gears, so pedalling at 30 km/h does not do anything. Luckily, you don't have to pedal :P

If you run out of battery, just give up and Uber home, because you won't make it otherwise.

It's a very comfortable ride, with the suspension and the thick tyres.

The warranty section tells you how to make the bike better.

Warning: The laws surrounding legal use of electric bicycles differ between states. The peak power of 400W for this model may exceed maximum allowed wattage for your state. Please check the relevant laws for your state and proceed at your own risk.

How much the rego and insurance cost?

    • It's an ebike no rego needed.

      • +1

E-bike that does not comply with all states road rules, therefore ride it on private properties only or register it. Say that to the police who fined someone over $2,500 for similar case.

        • -1

I know that, supposed to be peddle assisted only and no throttle and limited to 25 kmph and a 250 watt motor. This is saying max 400 watt so it's probably a 250 watt motor. So don't hack it and don't use the throttle and it's then legal to ride in Queensland anyway.

          • @paulaus: your logic amaze me, makes very sense, Not.

            • @huntabargain: Stupid rules with stupid measurements. This bike isn’t more powerful than multi thousand dollar bikes that are rated for “250 watts”

  • Load up to 150kg.

  • OP. How easy is it to assemble?

    • Comes basically fully assembled and unfolded, it’s a very compact (but heavy) bike. I think only the pedals had to be attached.

Not mentioned in the ad but it also comes with a lock and little basket thing.

cheaper in ebay with afterpay code $704.65 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/174782092609

    • Even better!!

      • Hi mate hows the pick up on these is it virtually instant or very slow do you think it would be ok to use for doing a letterbox drop of flyers.

        • I haven’t ridden a lot of ebikes but it sure feels like instant torque to me. Turn the throttle and you are off. Electric motors sure are addictive. I think you’d have to spend a lot more to get a more powerful bike. Feels faster than the ones I tested in actual shop that retail for 2k ish. I don’t think there’s many 48v ebikes in this price range.

Only problem I can see is the rear seat instead of a rear rack? Although I’m sure you could DIY a solution for that.

          • @IntoTheNewWorld: I just took back an Aldi ebike today it was big and the battery slid into the main frame but it kept coming unlocked and would come away enough to shut the system down.It was 594 reduced from 999 and the ride was hard as , it had a long pointy seat and wasn't good i felt every bump. I guess this should be ok if you keep a low profile and don't go zooming along footpaths drawing attention.

            • @paulaus: That’s no good, this bike feels really solid with the solid steel frame, and the battery has a lockable bolt to hold it in place.

This is probably the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden in my life. I assume it’s the three suspension points and the thick tyres but you basically float over bumps. I guess it also weighs a lot so that might help too.

PCMarket support was good too. I had a dud charger and they sent a new one out for me straight away.

              • @IntoTheNewWorld: That rear seat would have to go does the cushion just unbolt/unscrew leaving the frame there wouldn't want the boys in blue thinking its a 2 seater.

                • @paulaus: Might be problematic, there’s cables coming out of there but I haven’t tried too hard. The seat is very low and obviously only for children so it shouldn’t attract too much attention, especially being the same colour as the frame.

    • Now even cheaper on ebay $647.

      • Were u able to get it for that price?

        • Yes. Using the code. PLSAV22

          • @jamba: Can you share the screenshot of your reciept. I might be able to get the difference back through my credit card.

I have this bike too. I do wish it had gears, which would make it a lot better. Also the chain tension was too loose, so it kept falling off until I tightened it up. I also wish the back seat could hold a box for my stuff. Nobody is going to sit there really. Well built but it could be better.

    • Yes removable back seat would be great. I attached a Kmart basket to the front to compensate.

Gears would be great - I think of it as a more comfortable e-scooter instead of a bike.

  • What happens when you peddle without using battery? Are the pedals just cosmetic?

    • +1

It weighs a tonne, and with a single gear it will not get you going very quickly or easily. The pedals are useful on very steep inclines to help the motor though.

You do not notice the weight at all with the motor though, it’s pretty powerful.

  • This or Himo H1 hrmmm

    • Himo H1 is cheaper but load only 75kg.

    • -1

This is far more powerful, with a way bigger battery. This will get you up to 30km/h on a flat without pedalling, the himo h1 will only do 18km/h, and there’s no way to help it up steep inclines. Also, this looks more like a bike and has pedals, so it will appear to be more legal in more places.

But Himo H1 would be fine for short distances. I was tempted to get one too, but I got the Engwe for the versatility i.e I use it to take my son to childcare, and put a basket on the front.

      • This looks really interesting for the childcare trip - well done.

I can't spot the rear foot pegs though; where does your son put his feet? Any worries about getting his legs/pants caught in the chain?

        • Ah my son is still little so I’ve mounted another seat on the frame, where he’s sitting between the main seat and the handlebars. He gets a better view and can hold onto the handlebars. I did see a video on YouTube of someone putting pegs on the back though

          • @IntoTheNewWorld: Is that legal, you would hope no police is around! JBHi-Fi

            • @huntabargain: The child seat? Aftermarket child seats on bikes are legal as far as I’m aware. If not, the chances of getting fined are non existent.

I live in the ACT where escooters are legal :)

              • +1

@IntoTheNewWorld: Ok good luck, I thought most/all state (with minor variations) requires motor less than 250W and max speed of 25k/h, this bike does not fall into both categories!

                • -1

@huntabargain: Ah no the bike itself is definitely not compliant, but what are the odds of being pulled over and the officer figuring out the wattage or max speed?

                  • @IntoTheNewWorld: May be it looks more like a motor bike rather than Ebike! May be you have friendly or less police in ACT! I won't risk a fine of over $2,500

  • This or the Aldi one?

    • +1

Aldi one is cheaper, but the battery is about a third of the size, and 36v vs 48v, with a range of only 16km pedal assist. It also has a 250w motor vs 400w for this one.

They both have no gears, but the Engwe works around it by having a throttle, so you don’t really have to pedal.

  • you can get for much cheaper on pcmarket ebay store and use afterpay and apply the afterpay voucher, total is $704.65

    • how do you get the afterpay voucher? the only voucher I can find takes $50 off the listed price

  • -7

OP: "nudge nudge wink wink this is how you can make it even more illegal and dangerous for yourself and the people around you!"

  • I had an earlier Aldi ebike estate city very big had 7 gears but I found that not enough because when you are at max 25kph with motor assist peddling did nothing even in 7th gear so your basically stuck at 25 unless your going downhill.

  • Does this bike go by a different name? I can't find any proper reviews.

    • It seems this particular model isn’t sold widely internationally. The X5S is similar, but there’s more reviews. The higher model EP-2 Pro appears to be the most popular, but a lot more dollars.

  • New to Ebikes, is there a lock on the bike in case I park it?

    • There is a lock on the battery, and a key ignition like a car to start it.

But someone can still pedal it away, so you will need to lock it to a bike rack too. This one comes with a separate lock you can use with a bike rack.

  • Power to weight ratio should apply
if you weigh 50kg then only allowed 250 watts
but if you weigh 150kg then should be allowed 750 watts
    worth a try ha ha

    • It’s questionable anyway, peak 400 watts but maybe 250 watts continuous.

  • bought from pcm ebay store on the 21/08, tracking number provided, but still not shipped.

  • Got my one and i feel the charger fan is too loud . Anyone having similar issue?

    • It is loud but I guess it’s better to keep it cool?

      • I guess so. I just wanted to know if my carger was defective or its loud by design. Did my first long ride today and got back home after 38km and still a bar of charge left. Pretty happy with the range .

        • You are braver than me :)

          • @IntoTheNewWorld: Why u need to be brave? your charger is not making noise? Or you would not go that far in a small bike?

  • Gone mine but i cannot figure out how to fold it. The instructions manual is useless.
