Has Anyone Been Scammed with Buyers Using PayID?

Has anyone experienced issues with buyers trying to pay you via payID? I had a buyer drive 40 min to come and purchase something from me, and when I insisted on cash only, she said she'd go withdraw some cash and I never saw her again. It doesn't make sense for someone to drive 40 mins to come buy something and return empty handed.

Is there some trick to trying to pay via payID?

    Cash saves the day again

It would have been a fake PayID receipt.

She would show you the fake payment sent receipt and then kick off about how you are ripping her off.

    +1 for dodged a bullet.

    Username checks out

I had a buyer drive 40 min to come and purchase something from me

    Nice prelude

    I insisted on cash only

    You followed ozbargain civic duty

she left on her own accord.

    It doesn't make sense

      It certainly was an odyssey

    • She came all the way from the city?

    • What great insight.

  • Did you leave a payment option specified in the listing? I sold something on Gumtree and I didn't realise the listing defaults to accepting PayPal as a payment method, which means paying a large percentage to PayPal. I couldn't really change my mind because that's just how I listed it and how he wanted to pay. I would have preferred PayID to avoid the fees.

But you must have linked your PayPal at some stage. It's an opt-in payment system on Gumtree.

      • No I don't think I ever did. Maybe Gumtree knew I had a PayPal account because the same email address is linked to that email account on Gumtree and PayPal.

        • Did you correspond with the buyer outside Gumtree messaging? They may have got your email address or mobile number that way.

          • @MS Paint: No I looked at the ad in private browsing mode on my phone when he said PayPal and it definitely said PayPal accepted, like a logo graphic not typed in. I can't think why I would ever have linked it and then forgot, I had never paid or been paid anything with PayPal on Gumtree.

No, I turn that off as PayPal is terrible for sellers.

Don't get why people don't accept PayID. You've got a smart phone, you've got online banking, you get the money literally instantly, you can see it in your account, and it can't be reversed. It's everything cash is, but it's already deposited so you can go waste it on your next OzBargain purchase.

Don't accept a "receipt". Just open up your banking app and confirm it yourself.

In saying that - no, never been scammed. Because I can see the money in my bank instantly and know it isn't coming out.

Most banks have a 2hr ~ 24hr security hold depending on the amount (usually over $500)

    • I have heard that CBA has a 24h window where the payer can request to cancel. In which case you'll be screwed out of both your item and the money.

      • Interesting, so yeh, it appears scammers could exploit that security feature but I doubt they'd get away with it more than once:

Real-time fraud checks and holds to new payees

For security reasons, a hold may apply on first time payments. The delay allows fraud security checks to take place and gives you time to alert us to unauthorised or suspicious activity on your account. Subsequent payments should be received in under a minute.

But it doesn't appear in the recipients account. It's held at CBA

          • @Pete99: Yep, so the seller shouldn't hand over the goods until the money appears in their account…

I can imagine scammers doing the transfer in front of sucker-sellers to show them they've paid, then getting the transaction cancelled later…

            • @FLICKIT: that leaves the buyers open to being scammed, the seller can just claim they've never received the money.

You can't cancel a transaction with a security hold. It's there for CBA to perform automated checks - still, always ensure it's cleared into your account before handover.

PayID is also part of scam I think. If it's put on hold, and you handover the product, you are out of luck.

If you still want to accept PayID, make it clear to seller you will only hand over product when the payment is cleared in your account. Let them raise tantrums or call police. You are doing nothing wrong here.

I did payid once but I insisted on the buyer doing it front of me and I didn't give him the product until I saw the confirmation in my bank. It's reliable but still prefer cash

I have sold things and had the buyer use PayId in front of me asking me my phone number and confirming name when it appears. I had been worried about this initially but I think if they do it in front of you it should be ok - it appears in your account incredibly quickly.

i sold a car with payid as payment. buyer sent $1
    came to see car
was going to send the remainder but i noticed he spelt my name wrong on the payee description.

he fixed that, sent the big amount
    didn't arrive instantly

i said soz, come back tomorrow.
    transfer came next day
he arrived the day after to pick up the car.

    money hasnt been reversed

    all good

    not quite instant but okay

  • There was a fake commbank app a while back, could be that. It would say payment sent on their app, but it's not connected to anything. Best thing is to ignore people's stories when selling online eg first in with cash buys the item.

  • I unwittingly scammed someone with payid. Was in an area with very low mobile coverage (we had to leave his house and stand on the street to barely get one bar (tks Telstra)
. The nab app confirmed the payid was done, showed him the screen he was happy and went on our ways. Rang a day later to say got no money. Wtf I say. Anyway go to the app and no sign of the transaction…

I guess moral is to check your account as others have said. Don't just look at their app.

    • Did you send them the money again?
