Just keep in mind the front soundstage "On 'Standard' mode, the soundstage is about as wide as the bar itself," If you value stereo/front soundstage. Otherwise looks to be a great soundbar.

I just want them to release a soundbar with 6 separate speakers. Front left/right, rear left/right, centre and sub. I guess at that stage it just becomes a home theatre system or HTIB system.

    • +2

I don’t understand why they can’t make use of the side speakers in standard mode. Just push the stereo content to the front two, and the two side/front facing.

Besides music content sounding a little narrow, everything else sounds amazing on this bar and we’re loving it (except for a faulty rear speaker)

When comparing to the Bose 900 and Sonos Arc, there’s a couple advantages to the Samsung:
      - at least $800 cheaper than the Bose/Sonos when comparing the full setups (bar + rears + sub)
      - not requiring a tv with eARC for atmos

      • Yea it's more that they would have to rely on virtual sound to create left/right channels. They did say when you choose different modes that it does push the virtual stereo sound out more. If you have a big TV and you sit far from the soundbar, it's just worth considering is all. 100% agree re advantages.

    • I think you just described the old bose systems from the 90's/

      • More like HTIB, except the requirement is to run cables going from the speakers to a main unit, rather than a soundbar being running cables to a power point.

        • I get what you’re saying and kinda agree. I set our rears as fronts to see how it sounded and i was impressed. If you had the option to pair one more set of rears, it’d be perfect. Super wide front stage, rears and sub- all wireless.

          • @jztilly: Yep this would be ideal. If they just reduced the size of the centre bar, and let you pair two additional speakers for front L/R it would make a HUGE improvement.

  • Do Powerland actually have stock? A lot of the other retailers don't seem to have stock on this model.

Online, a lot of users have complained of the wireless connection to the subwoofer and rear speakers being dropped randomly. There were suggestions that the issues were due to faulty wireless transmitters in batches manufactured early in the year. I am hoping more recent batches will address this problem.

    • They do according to their official site.

As for the connection with rear speakers, it was a huge issue for me with my Sony subwoofer and rear speakers. Upon research it's seemingly extremely common with these soundbar/subwoofer/rear speaker systems (including older Samsung models) - think there were a few tricks I tried to get it to drop out less but nothing fixed it 100%.

  • I bought this to replace a 'proper' hifi setup previously (which had Atmos receiver, tower floor standers up front and wired satellites for surround and height/presence). I can say this soundbar actually gives a larger Atmos feel, more feeling of 'height' in the soundstage. I don't have a huge space however (it's why I chose to switch from the big speaker setup) so YMMV…

it's a very good price for a very good setup for movies. Not terribly good for pure music listening though, the surround sounds a bit fake and just having the front feels a bit 'small' for a pure stereo type music listening experience.

    EDIT:
to OP I used a pair of cheap speaker mounts from Bunnings, was just wandering through and found them - $15 from memory for a pair, they are small but have tilt/swivel

    • Was your “proper” HiFi system atmos?

      • yes. Atmos enabled Pioneer receiver, full surround speakers incl dedicated front height/presence speakers.

        • So you are saying you prefer virtual atmos over physical atmos?

          • @onlinepred: If there’s the same count (or more) of speakers in the q990b, does it still classify as “virtual”?

            • @jztilly: If you have 20 speakers in a unit like the sub, does that mean you have a 19.4.1 atmos? Physical means you have a speaker in an area. Like front left being sound directly coming from a roughly 1-2m to the left of your tv. Same as right. Soundbars have to virtualise the sound which reduces its ability to create a soundstage as good as a unit with physical atmos. Like a set of stereo speakers will have a better stereo soundstage and better sound positioning than a soundbar.

              • +1

@onlinepred: Hey i might be wrong, but virtual to me means that they're using software to emulate speakers. There are 9 physical speakers in the soundbar as far as i can tell?

We had 5.1 and I agree with jasiano… the soundbar for us with the 3 front firing speakers (L + R + C) + the 2 left firing + 2 right firing leaves us feeling more immersed than we did with the speakers to the left + right of the TV.

I don't understand your 20 speakers in the sub comment, but the side firing speakers do an amazing job in our place of bouncing off the walls which are at least 2m away from the TV.

Each to their own i guess

                • @jztilly: Lets say the TV is in front of you, you would expect most sounds to come from in front of you correct? So here lies the importance on the front speakers, and the heavy relieance for great front speakers. A physical speaker (not just the driver, a box and speakers/s, soundbars have multiple drivers in a single speaker) can make it sound like sound is coming directly fron that speaker with great precision and accuracy. If you add a second speaker being both left and right, now the soundstage that the speakers can produce has widenned because stereo sound is really wonderfull. With two quality speakers and a quality amp/dac, the speakers can reproduce sounds at any point between them, but also push out past them. They can also make sounds appear behind you, and at varying degrees in front of you. That's the power of stereo. Now the same can be said for rear speakers, they have the same ability as generally they come in pairs, rear left/rear right. With this setup of 4 speakers, you can create immersive surround sound with highly accurate sound positioning. With soundbars, you lose the whole front stereo setup, and instead it relies on pushing sound outwards, but the source is still the soundbar in the middle of the room. So it has to virtualise the front left and right channels, but speakers can only do so much, so they try software tricks to try and make it sound like it's coming from left and right, but this limits it's ability to position accurately left and right sounds as they rely on walls (which lets be honest, are not great for bouncing sound off of as you are losing accuracy and the walls absorb a small part of the waves. I have 3 TV rooms, the kids room with a 7.2.1 Samsung soundbar, the living room with s3000pro bookshelf speakers, and the media room with a Jamo system. The jamo is without a doubt, easily, without a contest, the more precise, fuller (due to larger speakers), more controlled bass, far more accurate soundstage, more realistic sounding system. I never have to adjust it. The soundbar never sounds good, I always have to change settings to try and suit the media, sometimes dialogue is muffled, sometimes music sounds lifeless, sometimes movies have way too much trebble in an attempt to emphasize surround sound. I would honestly take the bookshelf speakers over the soundbar, no joke. The bookshelf's have the same attributes, that they produce great sound no matter the source, and everything is represented equally, and it never tries to emphasize treble just to make it appear like it's soundstage is wider than it is.

I guess the point I'm making, is that stereo sound is the basis for any good setup, and soundbars are virtual stereo which puts them behind the race before you even start. And let’s be honest, the whole point of the soundbar was to reduce wires, but now you need a wire to the sub, wire to the soundbar, a wire to each rear. I mean a great HTIB requires just 2 more wires and will be far more capable. Look at the Onkyo HT-S7805 for instance. Hence why I was saying, I wish they would just include front left and right speakers the same as the rears, I would be much more inclined to recommend them then.

      i won't call a 5.1.2 system proper if a soundbar is better than that…

      • +2

ah… you're one of those who just assume soundbars with the latest digital processing technology can't be as good as having big separate analogue components and a receiver that can output a gazillion watts of power… cool cool…

        • I had a bose 900 + sub before moving to 5.1 and it's day and night in terms of sound stage. The 2 tiny upfired speakers are a joke. If there was a 2m long soundbar, it would be better…maybe
Is your room very small? watching tv from like 1.5m away?
          btw, YMMV is true

          • @spad: the room I have is maybe 3.5x4.5m thereabouts. TV & soundbar are maybe 2.5m away… so no, not a large room and probably helps the soundbar.
I guess my point is that not all soundbars are the same tiny/compressed feel, and neither are all traditional speaker & receiver setups.

I did get to 'test' out a few soundbars at a JBHifi before I made my purchase, the Bose 900 to my ears just was not as immersive as this Samsung even without rear speakers setup in store - whether that is digital trickery or not… both were much better than anything LG had to offer.

Either way… as long as we''re all happy with our choices :)

            • @jasiano: the worst part of that bose soundbar is its horizontal response. it's ok dead centre. Once you are like 50cm+ away from the centre, the mid/high range sucks. I am not saying all soundbars share the same issue but i would say most of them have that issue due to their form factor constraint. Most of them are just a series of full range speakers.

it could be a good thing if you can't hear the difference. You will save a lot

  • I bought this in the last sale, it's awesome for watching movies and music. eARC drops when I power on for first time, switching between TV audio and back to soundbar from TV fixes this issue. I have sony X90H, might work better with a new Samsung TV. Happy with the purchase though

  • Technical question: I have this soundbar installed between TV and Xbox and other player. Sometimes I want just to use Xbox/Player with headphones passing through video to TV. Does anyone know if it is possible to have such a setup with soundbar in standby mode? Or it should be always ON quietly consuming power (including sub and rears)?

    • +1

nope, it wont pass through anything without the bar being on. having said that - i've got one of those power switch thingy's which measures power usage. The bar doesn't really use much power and there's no discernable difference between when its on vs when it's off.

compared to my old denon amp which consumed 100w+ when it was out of standby

  • Recently purchased the Q800B, great soundbar but definitely need those rear speakers!

UPDATE: i ordered yesterday and somehow it’s coming today??

    • +2

If you don't mind, once you get it, let us know what month it's made in.

    On their webpage:

    https://www.powerland.com.au/samsung-11-1-4-channel-q-series…

It now says "STOCK DUE IN 1-2 WEEKS".

  • I have a Sony Htz9f and perfectly happy with it except missing rear speakers… Now I'm considering this set… Am I in another journey of chasing my own tail?? Ta

    • Had the same soundbar with the rear speakers and it's okay. These seem a lot better and the rear speakers are like 2-3x the size of the sony rear speakers.

      • Do u experience random disconnection in the Sony rear speakers? Read that in reviews. Thanks

        • yes i do, very annnoying

          • @Slut: Hmmm, this soundbar just became more tempting lol. Thanks

  • Ordered one due to arrive in one to two weeks

  • Looks like the June batch fixes the wireless disconnection problem:

    https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2022-samsung-q990b-11-1-4-d…

    • how do we check the manufacturers date?

      • According to some users on avsforum, there is a manufacturer's date on the back of the soundbar, above the words "Made in Vietnam" or whatever country it happens to be made in.

        • Hmm mine has no date on any of the labels. I found "Made in Vietnam" but no date to be found.

  • Bugger - just had this in the cart while I was reading some reviews and the coupon expired. Derp.
