Recommend a Good Modem Router for FTTB (100/20 Plan)

We are moving into a 2 bedroom apartment this weekend and looking to pick up a good modem router. Max download speeds with our ISP is 100 mbps download / 20 upload. Can anyone recommend a decent modem router combo that doesn't necessarily break the bank. We don't have any wifi 6 enabled/compatible devices but don't mind if the combo includes it so as to futureproof a little.

  • My opinion is to over provision where possible without going too deep.
Are you planning or expecting to move into a bigger house, will you benefit having ethernet available in other rooms etc, if so I'd recommend a mesh wifi system where you can always add satellites later when needed.
Otherwise a cheap basic modem/router will cover you

    • I don't think we will be moving any time soon (minimum 2 years) so a basic (but decent) modem router combo will tide us over. Any recommendations?

  • I have not seen anyone reporting issues with the normal VDSL2 modems at 100Mbs, with the exception of Technicolor manufactured devices (some Optus branded modems).

As you do not care about WIFI 5 and 6 then even better. Some RSP's require the modem to support certain tags and some modems support this, so you need to figure this out yourself.

You should also have a read of the following to ensure the VDSL modem you buy is NBN complaint for the changes NBN did earlier this year:

    • This is helpful, thanks for the informative feedback.

Grab a Telstra Gen 1 or 2 Technicolor DJA 0230/0231. Pick them up on facebook marketplace/gumtree for not much money. Shoot a message if you need a hand setting up!

    • Tp link axe 75. These are under $200 online and they reach amazing speeds

  • $20 vs $200… Are you using devices that are using Wifi 6?

    • Ended up getting the Telstra smart modem gen 2 second hand for $50 and it worked a treat
