Options for a Budget 4G/5G Device

Hi,

Just got the our new house (newly built), waiting for our nbn to be installed. just wondering what would be a good budget option for a temporary internet.

The internet is really just for our security purpose as we are not there all the time at the moment, but the security camera is going in soon, so if I can set something up temporary, I can then connect my phone to the security cameras.

thanks heaps

  • Optus Data Plan (eg. $15 5GB + bonus 5GB p/m) with Endless Data (shaped to 1.5Mbps when monthly quota exceeded) which may be sufficient for remote camera monitoring.

    • what device would you use with it? thx

    • Endless Data (shaped to 1.5Mbps when monthly quota exceeded) which may NOT be sufficient for remote camera monitoring.

      • +2

Depends on video resolution & compression rate for live streaming

        • +2

My Eufy doorbell camera stream only uses 100 - 200kb/s or so.

          • @Duff5000: 1 Mbps = 125 kB/s , and just enough for stream, not fast enough for 2k recording

  • Will you need a modem, or just a router?

The Telstra Smart modem is a decent modem and has 4G backup. Many second-hand ones still have an active sim. This could be a good option (shouldn't be more than $50). Using the sim won't affect the original owner

    • Tenda 4G03 N300 Wi-Fi 4G LTE Router would be better in term of signal dropping out , restarting, features

      • Yet the Telstra Smart Modem would hopefully (and most likely) come with a sim already, which won't cost you to use…

So why would the Tenda be better than that?

        • Please tell me where I can buy a Telstra modem which comes an active sim card so than I do not need to pay for my home internet usage anymore

          • @vinzchang: Gumtree/FB marketplace. I have one at home with an active sim in it from the old owner

            You're welcome

            • @spackbace: Would you able to use the sim card to access internet 24/7 without any major drop out? Speed ? Thanks

              • @vinzchang: Google - 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.

                • @spackbace: An used Telstar Smart Modem comes with an active sim card with 24/7 4G internet access without any ongoing fees.
                  Anyone else can confirm this?

    • Thanks, I'll have a look at that option. I think I really just need a internet connection with wifi signal
