Any Suggestions for Transferring Photos and Videos from iPhone 12 to Windows PC (Win10) ?

  • I googled and tried the Photos app on Windows but it crashes during transfer (Tried all sort of fixes to no avail). .
  • I also tried apps like Airmore but again was not able to transfer all data.
  • Simple copy paste from Internal storage also fails midways and one time copied half the volume.

I have around 128GB to transfer. Is there any other means or apps to do it easily? Your suggestions please.

Please note I don't want to transfer to iCloud and need it on my PC.

TIA

  • iMazing is often touted as one of the best third party solutions. iExplorer is also a good alternative.

    • Thanks. Licensed and free trial does not have much.

  • I found the best way is to sync with Onedrive.

Simple copy paste from Internal storage also fails midways and one time copied half the volume.

I've also had lots of issues the last couple of years doing it with iTunes.

  • i recently backed up about 5gb of photos off my iphone, and while using non genuine cables, it kept failing BUT when i found the charging cable that came with the phone, it worked first time

    • hit and miss… also, you'll lose any edits and special modes this way. eg. wont copy portrait mode.

3utools is a winner for this as well

I had gigs of data I needed to transfer from iPad to Windows 10 PC.

I absolutely hate Apple for how hard they make it to get files out.

This video really worked for me. I am not an expert so I don't know what it is called but it worked a treat.

    • This worked like a charm !

Although all files were transfered the data seems to be reduced as my DCIM folder shows around 126GB but when I copied all files from photos its shows 45 GB on PC. I am not sure why. Will give a try again with the traditional cable way and see what happens there.

      • Did a traditional copy paste from DCIM with cable but it failed again mid way saying - "A device attached to teh system is not functioning". Both PC and phone are plugged in, charging and unlocked (never sleep On). Used the iPhone cable as well. Not sure why its failing but will so with the the tarnsfer that I did using the youtube link yesterday.

        Thanks for your suggestion

I found the best way was to download the zip files from icloud. Cables and so on are a waste of time.

I do not know how I got the photos saved onto icloud though or how I downloaded them.

    • saved onto icloud

      "128GB"

Most people's icloud is only 5GB

I did not see that, I reckon after a clean out, 123GB of those files would be junk, 5GB left, my method would then work.

  • I believe PhotoSync has been suggested on here before.

    • Thanks

Don't try to copy all at once, do it it stages. Ie all photos from one month, then the next. Or if still too big, 50 files at a time etc.

    • Thanks. Will try in batches

  • share folder from Win10 PC (Samba share) and mount it in files on the phone, then copy files from phone to that shared folder

    • then copy files from phone to that shared folder

It's the copying that causes issues on Windows.

      • Isn't the issue with the iphone PTP/MTP ? I understood like that.

        • No idea, but it doesn't copy across edited files. You lose the edits.

  • with my Ipohne, i just simply plug it in and it opens up with the DCIM file and simply copy and paste.

    • This doesn't help but thanks for your response

  • I have a simple app on my iphone/ipad etc called Transfer Pro from Rambax.

It has a built-in lightweight web server, and you can use your browser to access the phone and easily view thumbnails and dowload photos/videos.

There is also an app that you can leverage on the desktop if needed

  • How come this is such a kefaffle and everybody is pretending not to know the solution? (well except Kiro they know)
OP specifically states they don't want to "use the cloud" so they aren't using iCloud and the photos are most likely stored on the phones memory.

You plug the damn thing into the computer with the USB lightning cable. Tap "trust" on the phone, then the iPhone shows up in My computer.
Then double click on iPhone and there is the photo folder in there, select all, then copy to computer.

The old fashioned way. Simple, fast transfer because it's wired (use a blue USB port for the fastest speed).
Then afterwards unplug iPhone, select all photos in the photos app and delete, go to "recently deleted" then delete all those. Done.

(I wouldn't "delete" the photos from File Explorer on Windows 10, in my experience sometimes iOS doesn't like that and the storage memory bugs out)

Even though I am a dumb consumer who isn't a computer whiz and I know this much.

Edit Ok I am an idiot and didn't read the third point. Don't know why it would fail transferring. Maybe when first plugging it in, open up iTunes and make sure it is finished "auto syncing/backupping" before opening file explorer and starting the transfer.
Otherwise I can't think of what is going wrong. Have you had your iPhone sitting at "storage low" for many months? Maybe the memory corrupted because it was 99% full for so long.

    • Not the storage low just popped couple of days back.

      • Weird. I must say though I have never actually attempted to copy 128GB worth of photos/videos to the computer with this method.
I try to do it semi-regularly which gives you a chance to view and sort some of them after copying and deleting.

I always open iTunes, plug the phone in and wait until iTunes has done it's thing though. Give that a try, that's as far as I can help.

Also maybe there is a time out for file transfers? Try selecting 1/3 of the photos at a time, write down the filename for the last photo you have selected so you know where you have copied to, and copy them in 3 separate chunks. Just thought of this one.
