Coffee Bean Recommendations - Dark/Medium Roast, No/Low Acid, No Milk-Based Coffees

Calling all OzBargain black/no-milk coffee aficionados and experts…..

I am after a dark/medium roasted bean that is not acidic or, has lowest possible acidity.

Any recommendations/suggestions for beans that are:

  • a value pick (Aldi/Coles/Woolies etc.)
  • a premium pick - WA (Local roasters in the Perth region)
  • a premium pick - National (Roasters throughout Australia )

Thank you :)

Calling all Ozbargain - Coffee Bean Recommendations

    Whatever is on sale.

    • Thanks jv, just did not want to buy more beans that do not work for me.

    • LMAO that's the best way to go, the ozbargain logic.

If acidity is your issue, that means you dont like Arabica beans. So pick Robusta instead. Price category doesnt solve your acidity problem if you pick the wrong beans to start.

    • Thanks KaTst3r, I tried Robusta heavy blends - but they gave me the jitters :)

  • I am exactly the opposite.I like light roasted acidic fruity coffee for pourover and non acidic medium roast with chocolatey, caramelly coffee for milk based ones. I get my coffee from local roaster here in perth. Cheap coffee in Woolies/Coles/Aldi are terrible for pourovers. You might as well get a good fresh roasted coffee from your local roaster ( or from Anywhere in Australia) for that excellent cup every day.

    • Thanks carlJack, funny how personal tastes work. I find I get a bit of sore-throat with the acidic/fruity types - might be a mild allergy. What local roaster(s) would you recommend in Perth?

      • I have a subscription with Dantes Coffee. Have also tried Antz coffee, Blacklist, Koffee and bean in O'Connor ( Cheapest local roaster probably), Aussie roasters in Canningvale to name a few.

        • Thanks for the suggestions carlJack

      • Five senses in Rockingham is the most consistent I have experienced.

The coffee so roast type will depend on your brew method you are using.

        • Thanks MrBr0, mostly using a plunger.

Aldi Dark roast beans, $12.99 for a kg and you will make a consistently very good coffee.

I often struggle with more expensive beans, sometimes a winner, sometimes not, and on sale you're going to be paying $30/kg. I'm yet to find the one that I find outperforms the Aldi ones on value/availability/taste

    • Thanks smoothymcmellow. My thoughts exactly, had a couple of non-winners recently, so I thought I would ask the question.

I have recently decided to dive into black/no-milk coffee, and suddenly I am much more discerning of the type of bean I like :). Milk/sugar hide so many flavours that you might not otherwise enjoy.

    • Hsve you tried the aldi medium-dark beans? How do the dark beans compare to them?

      • What are they called and how does the package look like?

        • They're the lazzio brand, and labelled dark and medium dark. Medium dark is in white bags with black lettering, dark beans are the reverse.
