First comment on a post about tea bags from Dilmah is your plastics one and you're acting surprised that people read it as a comment on Dilmah tea bags because clearly you didn't mean them? Bull shit.

          • -2

@banana365: Tbh I didn't know anything about Dilmah bags but the best way to get someone to do research for you online is tell them they're wrong or spout misinformation. Now I know I can safely buy Dilmah in the future. Worth the down votes.

Looks like they are made of paper and not plastic.

        Best tea among others

      • +19

Plus we should support Sri Lanka at this time.

        • +2

Do you seriously think that Sri Lanka's problem is that people are not buying enough tea from them? The problem is that due to the current world order Sri Lanka is peripheral country - thus, recieve a disproportionately small share of global wealth. But, whatever makes you feel good.

          • +1

@Musiclover: I think you will find that they had reasonable wealth except a corrupt family of politicians embezzled the lions share (no pun based on the Sri Lankan flag intended).

            • -2

@camelthief: Really? That's a usually an easy way to look at it - blame some politicians.

              According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_financial…
Sri Lanka is on the 48th place in the world (between Peru and Philippines). Sure, there may be poorer countries. But compare to the USA - a typical core country: it is 122 times richer per capita.

They may have had "reasoanble wealth" before British rule, sure, but that's another story for another day.

          • +3

@Musiclover: There are plenty of "peripheral" countries that are doing just fine. There problem is mostly economic mismanagement combined with COVID impacts.

            • +1

@Aureus: There is a world economic crisis that started before Covid. Poorer countries give in to it first, because the fact of being poorer makes them weaker. I was just talking about the reasons of them being poor. Examples of countries that have problems right now, in no particular order, apart Sri Lanka: Afganistan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Nigeria, Syria (was not doing that bad before American 'liberation'), Myanmar, Sudan, Lebanon even Turkey with their hyperinflation… Just too many to list.

Which peripheral country is doing "just fine" at the moment?

              • +3

@Musiclover: I completely agree with Musiclover. The root course is obviously the world economic crisis that's long due and already impacting the peripheral countries. The face of the problem appears to be the corrupted politicians etc (of course portraits as that in popular media). Economic mismanagement and corruption are no doubt issues in Sri Lanka but definitely not the root course of the crisis they're facing right now. Not everyone can see the whole picture and put pieces together to understand the basics, everyone seems to love the simple reason given to them by the media. This is from someone who migrated from Sri Lanka having lived there for most of the life and seen this crisis waiting to happen over 10 years ago. Having said that, I'd still do my bit to send some valuable dollars to the country (knowing that's just a temporary solution even if it works.. while big players are doing a world politics game, people in majority of poorer countries suffer enormously.)

                • +4

@npnp: Their politicians embezzled Billions of dollars (US) worth of funds. The former President and his cronies are the root cause of the current crisis in Sri Lanka.

No need to look for the illuminati, lizard people or other conspiracies to blame and protect the corrupt politicians for their heinous crimes.

                  • -1

@camelthief: You make fun of conspiracy theories - and yet you blame politician's conspiracy. Ironic, isn't it.

What I describe above is just universal laws of economics, applicable to the world order, as simple as laws of physics and backed up by facts. There are no conspiracies. It is world systems theory,

                • @npnp: Never changing my oil or topping it up may have contributed to my engine blowing up, but it isn't the whole picture, everyone seems to love the simple reason given to them by the mechanics. This is coming from someone who drives a car. (US and NATO is the root cause of my engine failure)

                  • -1

@Aureus: Oh that's adorable. All Sri Lanka's problems were just due to them not changing bad, corrupt politicians to the good and honest ones. Is that how it works? It is as easy to do as changing oil in your car as well.
I take it, you are very happy with Asutralian politicians, otherwise, you would have changed them to better ones? I put it out to you, that even when we will start killing and dying for the South China Sea which we "need oh so much" - you will have no say in this, same as most political decisions in this country, really. You will just be explained why it is good for you and will agree to it without thinking.

                    • +1

@Musiclover: That wasn't my point at all.

Sri Lanka's government made poor decisions and did not listen to specialists who advised against what they were doing. Corruption is only one part of their issues.

Sri Lanka blew up their economy by enacting poor economic policies and not listening to the experts, in the same way I blew up my engine by enacting poor car maintenance and not listening to the mechanics.

It isn't the fault of the people of Sri Lanka, "the west", IMF. Sri Lankan government is at fault.

                      • +2

@Aureus: Sure they were corrupt but they were also unlucky. And the people of Sri Lanka chose their leaders, so they can't escape responsibility either.

The Sri Lankan government made big unfunded tax cuts in 2019 as (IIRC) it was an election pledge, although the ruling classes were the main beneficiaries. Unlucky for them COVID hit very soon afterwards and all inbound tourism stopped, creating a balance of payments crisis as the government couldn't fund imports of chemical fertiliser and energy. They then switched to organic fertiliser to stem the hard currency outflows, but those organic fertilisers were practically useless and the country's agricultural sector collapsed, killing another of Sri Lanka's main hard currency earners. And then the war in Ukraine happened, and energy prices went through the roof.

                        • +1

@safrane: Don't forget their massive debt trap they fell in withChina which basically, which basically claimed some of their key infrastructure

Funny that, I was just browsing coles and woolworths for teas, so hard to find loose teas - choice is so limited. There is one that I always buy - Queen Victoria English Breakfast. $3 on special, great value. But no grean or other black really. Sad. T2 or Tea Centre prices are inhumane.

    • +3

If you want loose tea that is strong, hop into a srilankan grocery store. They stock few varieties. Look for the tea grades bopf (they are marked on packet).

    • Buy Taj Mahal from Indian section in coles .. currently on special for $9.90 for a 900 grms or so .. strong one if u like ..

    • Arab supermarkets are another good source for cheap and awesome black leaf tea - just look for the bulk packs with Cyrillic and Arabic writing.

  • "Why are people so unkind?" - Kahmal. Might have my teas mixed up. Pretty sure he was the face of this brand in the 80s/90s

    • +8

      Do try it!

I've been to sri Lanka…. Beautiful country

      • +1

Is it safe to visit with the current unrest?

        • +1

Yes mostly, except Colombo… Not much to see in the capital anyway so can be skipped. even the airport is not really in Colombo

My brother in law was over there to cover the cricket for SMH

  • Nice, thanks

    Dilmah extra strength - GOAT

    • I usually drink Dilmah 'regular' - what difference is the extra strength (serious question - what sort of differences in the flavour can I expect?)

      • +1

        Stronger tea flavour.

      • +1

I luv Dilmah, my fave tea..

After brewing in a mug for 3-5 mins TBH i hardly notice any difference. Admittedly ive never performed a side-by-side coomparison.

    • Finally someone who likes their tea strong!

  • +2

The only black tea I drink, every time I make a cup for someone who hasn't had it they like it.

  • +14

Buy it for the Sri Lankans and make a small difference.

  • I cant be the only one that thought the box looks like a kaspersky anti-virus box lmao

  • +2

Best black tea and I prefer the extra strength for a stronger cup.

    • How does extra strength compare against regular with bag left in the water in longer?

      • +2

It tastes better actually, I think when I leave the tea bags for too long, that introduces a slight bitterness (from over-brewing I guess?)

      • +2

        I prefer the regular

  • how does it taste comparing to twinning

    • +2

For $2.80, you can give it a try. Tastes pretty good tbh

    • I prefer Twinning.

    • +6

Twinning is a blend and Dilma is single origin
Both have their distinctive flavours, but Dilma is definitely value for money!

      • +3

True this. Once you taste single malt stuff, you won't even look at blended stuff anymore. The other way around is unheard of. Dilma would be a bit stronger than Twinning but for someone who's used to Dilma, Twinning may seem rather bland. My wife prefers Dilma strong (even then she puts two packets to make one tea) and for her even Dilma regular is bland let along Twinning. Lol. I have been to Nerada tea facility in Cairns and I've been to many tea factories in Sri Lanka as well. Despite being a developing country, I thought Sri Lankan tea factories are well equipped and well maintained (nothing's wrong with Nerada facility, I just felt it to be rather average in comparison). Dilma, being one of recognised brand names, maintain a strict quality control in their tea sources.

        • +1

What are you, some kind of tea expert visiting all these factories? 😂

        • +1

I've been to may tea factories in Sri lanka including few Dilmah as well,, I've seen their strict quality control. For me I have no doubt on their product,, Thanks OP, bought 8 boxes..

      • +2

Different production methods. Twinings, like most other brands, use crush tear curl and this gives an much quicker and stronger brew and slightly more bitter edge. Dilmah use the orthodox method and it's a longer brew with a softer edge. There's nothing wrong with either way, it comes down to what you like. Buy some Dilmah and do try it… Follow the instructions on the box though!

    • +1

Dilmah use BOPF leaves in terms of tea grading (look it up if you’re not across it). Pretty sure Twinnings use Dust grade in their bags. So you’re getting a far better quality tea here.

    • +5

      *Twinings

    • Twinning used to be my fav, then I tried Dilmah… Twinning tastes bland in comparison.

  • Love this tea over twinning. again this would be very subjective.

    unrelated question.
how is the tea name pronounced ?
    - Key-Lon
    - Chi-Lon
    - Sea-Lon

    • Sea Lion

    • Sellon

    • Ceylon aka Sri Lanka, British used during the colonisation.

    • Sea-lon

    • Say-lon

  • +2

    Best tea ever IMHO

    • Better than boutique/speciality single origins?

    • Second best , best would be loose leaf BOP tea.

  • These are good, nice and strong, replaced coffee in the morning for me….

  • Promo on the loose leaf?

  • There is a common denominator with most of these 'poor' countries and its not that there catholic!

  • +1

    Do try it

  • What century was Dilmah founded? I feel as though they have a rich history.

  • these go on sale every few months or so yeh?
