Not at Fault Accident - Should Possible Illegal Modifications Be Removed?

Someone I know was just in a not at fault accident. They know may or may not have leds illegally installed and an aftermarket headunit hypothetically should someone remove these before taking their car to the repairer?

If they have leds in halogen housings, they should take them out and crush them, I'm sick of being blinded by these morons.

I also vote for crushing morons that muck around with headlights.

Usually its cheapo xenon conversion kits off eBay, bloody dangerous in a reflector headlight.

Not all Leds in halogen housings are terrible, had some in my monaro and they were pretty good (both as headlights and not blinding people) - was a kit specifically for the car though.

      • I'm sure they were great for you, the cutoff was very likely terrible for anyone coming the other way.

        • Wasnt, as I checked - I wouldnt have left them in if they were

          • @Franc-T: How did you check? Did you let someone drive your car whilst you drove another car in the opposite direction?

@John Kimble: Initially checked the beams along a wall - then wen to carpark and from about 100m, from memory- i think I had to adjust them slightly but cant remember exactly as it was years ago.

    Someone I know

    As usual, that makes sense.

    • I dunno, is this is a post about leds or the OP, who wants to meet better people.

      • OP said it is hypothetically… not sure what to believe…

Do you know you too? That can be someone you know :)

        • U2, nah but I have their CD's.

    aftermarket headunit

Oooh, gotta watch out for those checks notes perfectly standard modifications

  • No, the repairer will deal with it and let the insurance company know about it.

What do you think will happen!!!!!

Someone you know, right? And definitely not you?

  • Depends, previously my insurance company let me strip the car of the undeclared mods (Wheels, coils, head unit, bov) as it was considered a write off as long I returned the insured buts and they won't declared as contributors to the accident.

    • Thanks, only useful comment on here. They're reverting everything to stock right now.

    an aftermarket headunit

Awwwww shit, fam, I would get that removed before the cops find out… 90% of all road accidents in Australia are attributed to aftermarket head units. Lucky your "friend" survived.

    • Aftermarket head units = fine. Ones that play videos whilst car running = not fine, and if a witness says they werent looking at the road, its a reason the insurance can be difficult.

Bet you this is on a vt commodore with doors held together by cable ties

  • Asking for a friend

  • Insurance companies are fussy when the car has illegal modifications (where road authorities at your state declare illegal). Check the insurance PDS of what they do or do not cover. The main things insurance companies look at are tyre baldness, brakes, the car is very lowered, major engine modification (like for example a turbo charged car has spaghetti pipes everywhere that did not come factory) The stereo head unit will be fine not to reject insurance (however if the car is written off it will not be covered unless declared etc)

    • Their car is covered for all legal modifications, in their case they have legal tint and slightly lowered. They're just scared that the LEDs and/or headunit might be a reason for the insurer to deny the claim even though it did not contribute to the crash. They have already removed the modifications just as a precaution though. There are no modifications to the engine, intake, exhaust or anything else. Just a factory body kit.

      • Yep. Good move.
