Multi Day Stopover Domestic Redemption Flight. Can It Be Done?

So my partner wants to go to Qld. I want to go to the snow.

Now a Qantas or Virgin redemption flight Adl to Cairns is always via Melbourne or Sydney.

Is it possible to book a redemption flight to Cairns, but have a 4 day stopover Melbourne?

If so, how do you do it?

Ie. Who with, via website or need the call up etc

I'm 3 years travel rusty!

Cheers

I'm guessing you need to book several one way tickets.

    YPAD - YMML
    YMML - YBCS
    YBCS - YPAD

    • Hoping to avoid multi one ways since we have to go through Melbourne anyway.

      No idea what YPAD is?

Couldnt you just use the multi city tool?

    • Dont recon it applies to redemption flights.

      • Yes it does? Source: Did SYD-ADL-MEL-SYD back in November on Virgin because there were no Business Rewards flights for ADL-SYD

        • Did you take this flight?

If you miss the first leg you normally forgo the lot.

@tunzafun001: Yes? Why wouldn't I take the flight?

To clarify, it was SYD-ADL, then ADL-MEL-SYD

            • @kerfuffle: Ah, that makes sense.

I just tried the Multi City Option (Virgin).

It simply just gives you the equivalent one way fares for each leg.

As for Qantas, only <24hr stopovers are allowed. Anything more is considered a layover.

  • You can book such a journey as a single redemption ticket through either QFF or VFF, but neither will offer a discount on the stopover - once you hit the 24 hour mark between arrival and departure at any single city (sometimes the test is more stringent, and you're not allowed to overnight at a transit point), the journey is broken and each non-continuous part will be charged separately. You may still want to do it anyway just so your entire journey is on one ticket, as that will make cancellations cheaper and also give you some additional protection in case of flight disruptions, etc.

Some of Qantas and Virgin's international partners offer stopover options on redemption tickets - e.g. when you redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points for flights on Virgin, you can choose to pay a stopover surcharge to create a 4 day stopover between flights. That said, if you're flying in economy and don't have points in those other programs already, it's not really worth exploring them as an option.

    • Yeah, I see a 24hr plus "stopover' becomes a "layover" .. which is not allowed.

Good insights for the rest.. cheers.
