How to Connect Behringer EUROLIVE B115D PA Speaker to 3.5mm to Playback

I have purchased a Behringer EUROLIVE B115D PA Speaker it has combination xlr/trs plug I need to be able to connect a 3.5mm jack to this. I have bought heaps of cables to try to make this set up work, but they always output one channel (left or right) only or low volume with lots of loud pops. I feel like the issue has something to do with sending an unbalanced stereo signal to a balanced input.

I am not sure how to fix the signal to make this work. Do I need an audio mixer? Is there a special cable I can buy?

I feel like this should be so simple

  • Definitely sounds like a balanced versus L/R signal issue.

You can do a cheap and dirty fix by cutting a cable, then bridging the L&R signals together to get mono instead which should go into the centre pin of the 1/4" jack. Then, bridge the ring and ground together which connects to the ground of the 3.5mm input.

It won't be pretty, but it'll work in a pinch to get some sound

    • Yes I think I have tried this set up but I think the issue is the stereo that goes in is unbalanced

      • Technically yes it is unbalanced. However, without spending money on a dedicated mixer, a mono unbalanced signal will work.

If you have the option, I'd return the B115D and swap for something like a B115W which has Bluetooth - that makes it trivially easy for playing music (which is what I presume you're trying to do).

        • I know buyer regret I purchased the B115d when it first came out, the w was released a few years later I think, I wish this was available at the time. I don't think I could justify dropping another $600 . Would a mixer solve my problem?

          • @base2aau: A mixer will permanently solve this, since that's what these powered speakers are designed to natively connect to. However:

            • Mixers are expensive - several hundred dollars for a basic one
            • Also need power, and additional cables to connect
            • Bulky to transport and setup.

I would go and make friends at your nearest audio supplier/DJ/Jaycar and explain exactly what you have and what you want - you need someone more experienced than yourself showing you how it all works and what you actually need to buy. If you don't know how to setup a professional grade speaker then I have no idea why you bought it in the first place.

            • @Switchblade88: At the time I was thinking I would get and amazing 1000w sound system for a $450 (that was the price at the time. it has worked out a bit more difficult than I thought.

@base2aau: You've tried to buy a supercar by starting with a single tyre unfortunately

  • Yep, you can't send a stereo signal to that input easily, but if you aren't using the other channel…a cable like this:

will allow you to send the left to one side, the right to the other. This mix will obviously be a blended mono, but should sound right.

    • I ordered but I just saw this in the discription,"Avoid Weird Sounds - Stereo to Balanced does not work!
When sending a "stereo" signal (from iPod, etc.), using a typical 3.5mm to XLR cable wired for a stereo/balanced connection, will result in a balanced XLR input reading the "stereo" signal as "balanced" and cancelling out some sound and generally making your audio sound very odd."

I am not sure if this means it will not solve my problem?

That's not a warning about this cable, but explaining why you might have had problems with 'other' cables.

Those 'other' cables put the left and right channels on separate pins of the XLR (no good for you), whereas this cable combine the left and right channels to a single pin.

  • Try Swamp. They have heaps of cables, as well as mixers etc.
