Smart Watch for Elderly / Low Tech Savvy Person (Preferably Android)

Hi Everyone,

As the title suggest I'm looking for a watch for my aging mum. Her doctor has suggested a smart watch with fall detection, the ability to use the watch to find her phone (which she misplaces often) and the ability to send an SOS or help message to family or the emergency services.

I know there are lots of watches out at the moment that have all these features. The issue I have is finding one that can be operated by a person with very limited technical / problem solving knowledge. I have also found many companies that offer watches with these features but as a service which means they charge an ongoing cost. I'd rather avoid this unnecessary cost for my mum if possible.

Has someone here had the same issue and had any success with a particular brand or type of watch? Possibly, with the ability to set the watch into a simpler user interface mode.

My preference is Android so she is able to keep her current phone and not have to learn a whole new mobile operating system.

Any suggestions you have would be great, Thanks!

  • Samsung added fall detection to some of their Galaxy Watch lines in 2021.

  • Amazfit or Xiaomi make some pretty nice and cheap easy to use smart watches. Although I don’t know about fall detection in any of their models.

And usually, the more features they have, the more difficult/confusing they are to operate. Maybe get a simple watch that does basics, like vibrates on call/messages and helps her find her phone, but look at a dedicated SOS button for falls and other emergency issues where all she has to do is hit the button.

Forget about a smart watch of any kind.
Keep it as simple as possible.

    Look up Live Life Alarms.
Got my Dad to get the pendant and they have a new watch style version.
Ongoing cellular plan as that is how it communicates.
Don't know about finding the phone though.

There is nothing to learn. If you want to send a message on iPhone you touch the messages icon. If you want to make a call, you touch the phone icon. It sounds like she’s not very tech savvy, so would not be doing much more than that.

I think the Apple Watch is the most reliable for the functions you mentioned.
