It's a staple in our household, fiancee is Chinese and she swears by this stuff.
Naturally it depends on how much water you put in the rice cooker but it's a more sticky sort of rice compared to Basmati, so more suitable for picking up with chopsticks as a side to the dish.
Basmati is great though for curries and whatnot.
Jasmine rice is better imo, medium grain is ehhh
Jasmine is also more suited for curries/thai dishes I believe.
In saying that I don't think we've bought Jasmine before, half price at coles this week so might grab a bag to try.
Ah cool - appreciate the replies.
I tend to use basmati for 90% of stuff purely as it's got a very low glycemic index(GI) compared to other rices - Jasmine's is pretty high despite it 'meshing' better with thai, chinese, asian style foods. Like the 'wholemeal bread' of rices instead of 'white'. :-)
Also doesn't hurt that it's (Basmati) such a cinch to cook perfectly - whereas I find Jamine easy to overcook, ruining the texture (I'm strictly an absorbtion method cooker).
Medium grain is delicious but pretty sure it's high GI. It's got a sticky and sweet vibe that I find mildly addictive. I think Korean food uses medium grain a lot, which is why the bed that the Bibimbap is so delicious!
Mrs. swears on only SunRice medium grain. We tried another brand's medium grain and she hated it. Anything that isn't SunRice medium grain tastes weird to her which I never understood….rice is rice and they all taste good to me lol
It is not the taste. It is the texture which makes the difference. I used Jasmine / Basmati rice for occasional fried rice. Medium grain rice for steam rice. Abborio for risotto. Never bother using Japanese rice, which I loved so much when we were on cruiseship in Japan. They served rice and Ramen everyday. Never bought any Japanese rice in Australia. Might try one bag when they are on special.
It's Arborio though
Wait till your Mrs tries those $30-40 per 10kg rice from Northern China, Taiwan or Korea that is only found in Asian supermarket. Then she will never eat SunRice again. The texture and aroma when cooked is like next level perfection.
Kind of depends on what meal it's going with. I always prefer basmati for indian curries but eat jasmine rice for most other things. Never been a fan of medium grain rice.
We only use the medium grain rice in soups…
I absolutely love Nishiki rice (Japanese short grain, grown in America), they are incredible but of course much more expensive than Sunrice. Alas they are impossible to find since Covid.
So you love an expensive thing you can't get?
Sounds like me and the Ford GT40 i'll probably never own :P
Upside to the winter floods is now cheaper rice
Quality of the Aus grown SunRice is usually OK but their are seasonal differences so the only way to tell is to try a pack
At least SunRice do not have to resort to importing stock from Vietnam, Thailand or Cambodia
Sunrice tends to be my least favourite brand of rice, but at $7 for 5KG, I would not reject it.
Woolworths now selling sunrice medium 10kg for $38, so even when it is half price, it is $9.5 per 5kg. $7 per 5kg is a very good price.
Has Woolworth increase their price on 10kg Sunriver medium grain as from my memory it was $32 not long ago?
It was $8 for 5kg when half-price. 10kg was also $16 when half-price at Woolworths. So this one is definitely cheaper.
I bought 6 bags myself tonight and another person in front of me bought around 10 bags.
I usually go by species of rice.
The species of medium grain sunrice is Calrose rice. We eat calrose for our normal meals (taiwanese).
If we eat Japanese, we always go with the species, 'Koshihikari' rice. This is the absolute best of the short grain rice.Jasmine is what most of SE Asia eat. Can't speak for China.
Basmati is more for Indian cuisine.10kg used to be $5
Lol
How’s life back in the early 90s?
Australian rice is a very poor use of our resources. Buy your rice from Vietnam,Thailand, India and like where the climate is naturally conducive to rice growing and as a bonus you end up with a better product be it Indian premium Basmati or Thai Jasmine rice.
How do folks find medium grain rice goes when cooked?
I've been strictly a basmati (mainly!) or jasmine buyer for decades now (except for speciality rices like abborio for rissotto or short grain for japanese).
