2290

Battalion recaptures the core of classic competitive shooters & refines the ‘classic’ FPS feel for the next generation. Focusing on 5v5 infantry combat, where precise flick shots with your Kar98, covering fire with your Thompson and fluid movement are key to clutching every round for your team.

BATTALION: Legacy is the revisited and final version of Battalion 1944 (currently selling $26.95), released for free to all on August 16th 2022. We have taken the best aspects of Battalion 1944 and honed in on these to create a fluid bug free experience, featuring a working server browser, an added faction, new weapons, classic Search & Destroy game mode with all weapons available, complete UI rework and visual overhaul. Battalion: Legacy is the culmination of work consolidated into one old school experience for all to enjoy.

Mostly negative reviews but it's freeeeee

A lot of negative reviews seem to be because the multiplayer dead and asking for it to go free to play.

"The developer incentivized users to make positive reviews in exchange for game sales, and then went on to delete his Reddit account in response to criticism they received."

"We have formally ended our relationship with Square Enix. We want to start this exciting new chapter where we began, focusing on the players."
sounds like a good FU to SE, I'll give it a play just for the developer saying that.

I really liked the game, but it died in the water within like 2 weeks so I refunded. It's actually really good, awesome that it's f2p now.

  • +1

Had my eye on this game a while ago, was close to buying the game at a point, glad it's going free-to-play now!

Wonder if it'll be able to compete with the likes of Valorant or Counter Strike in terms of dedicated player base and skill ceiling.

    • +4

Look, anything is possible but I can confidently say it won’t.

    • +3

If a dedicated player base can consist of 10 people then sure!

This kind of a reboot of Day of Defeat? One of my all time favourite games.

EDIT: looks heavily inspired by DoD except aimed at a competitive team angle like DoD was (although that usually was 6v6)

It was based on a competitive mod for Call of Duty 4 called Promod

Funnily enough the same studio are now working on a remake with the same name. Seems to be more promising than Battalion when I played the beta

  • +2

I was a beta tester for this game: Promising mix of Call of Duty mixed with Counterstrike S&D gameplay, and overall tight gameplay, but little to offer outside of a couple hours of fun due to poor map design and weapon balancing.

Most reviews are negative because the servers have been empty since 99% of the player base left 1-2 months after the game released.

I'll for sure go back to check it out, but don't expect this to last much longer than it has the other time they tried to revive it.

There are only a finite number of gamers with a finite number of hours, split across multiple platforms. There are so many games competing for a player's time, so many of these multiplayer games are doomed to fail due to not having a sufficient playerbase.

Patient gamers like me miss out, since by the time a game becomes cheap or free it has a miniscule playerbase.

The market is oversaturated. Even well made new releases often have no players here.

Doesnt help we are in a smaller region, either.

Nor does the fact that a lot of games rely on matchmaking now and, to a lesser extent, the fact server lists can't be found before you buy a game (GameSpy, games.on.net etc.).

        • +1

I miss games.on.net always used to look for them and Ausgamers servers in the massive server lists of yore. Matchmaking is crap in modern games, I want to be able to just jump into a server with a bunch of players on a map I enjoy. I hate sitting there for 5 minutes while its 'searching for a game' then just be dumped into a totally empty server. Even if a server is playing a map I don't particularly enjoy it's good to be able to join a populated game and then when the map switches keep playing with that crowd.

  • Steam's "add to library" feature came just in time!

    • Seems to be a permanent shift in the games direction rather than a time limited promotion, you would've been able to grab it at any point in the future.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check this game out. It reminds me of good old cod2 mp from back in the day!

I remember the lag on multiplayer where you shot ahead of the player to be competitive.
Living next to a Telstra exchange helped but the servers were half a world away.

    • +1

That is because it was developed by similar people. Specifically the people behind Warmod & Promod.

Sadly the game was managed so poorly and everything to do with match making and the community was a complete shit show.

  • Keeps saying something went wrong when trying to access the game page. Anyone else?

    • I was having issues before, checked again and it's working now.

Pointless trivia: I sold these guys their domain name (for the cost of my registration expenses basically). I’d registered it for something I ended up renaming slightly.

    • +2

      good pointless trivia

    • +2

      Should buy it back

(for the cost of my registration expenses basically)

So you gifted it to them, should've at least made $100 out of it.

      • They also put me in touch with a dev relations rep at Sony though it ultimately didn’t work out.

  • This game had a lot of hype in the competitive FPS community on its release (teams and notable players learning it, etc.) but pretty much died soon after.
I don't think it died cause it was a bad game necessarily. I just think competitive FPS gamers were/are spoilt for choice, i.e. CS:GO, Valorant, Overwatch, etc.

The gameplay is quite solid. Simply put if you enjoyed Day of Defeat: Source back in the day, you'll definitely enjoy it (as long as there's still players online to play against) and if you enjoy competitive FPS games in general then you might enjoy it also.

    • I don't think it died cause it was a bad game necessarily.

Really? The reviews all say map design & weapon balance are poor. I guess it would be considered decent for a free game but when you are aiming at the competitive scene you need to hire some pros.
