We are heading to the US as a family and need 2 weeks of car hire (LAX pick up and return). We have travel insurance already lined up with Allianz and I must admit the rental insurances online are confusing. Does anyone have an experience or tips they can share?

Generally Rentalcars.com or Opodo cars has full CDW rentals (so $0 excess for car damage) and will have a $9-12/day add-on insurance option that covers extra items like tyre puncture, broken window, lost keys, misfuel, personal possessions, some liabilities etc up to a cap (not included in CDW). Well worth the peace of mind and what I do.

Did have a tyre blowout last year in the mountains and the $400 tyre replacement was covered by extra add-on insurance (you pay at garage, keep receipt then claim from insurer when back home and they re-reimburse in couple weeks). So was well worth it.
i asked the same question 4 years ago and got some answers - here's the post
I ended up booking with Turo - it's a car sharing site - like airbnb but for cars. - just note that travel insurance which covers the excess for car rental (i.e. from a car rental comp) Turo isn't exactly a car rental place so travel insurance may not cover vehicles from there.
I have got sone good deals using cdp codes wirh hertz in the states. Much better than using them here. Car upgrades and an extra 4 hours to return the car which can end up saving you a day. It's ended up being cheaper than any of the aggregator sites can get me. I've only used the aus platinum one, you don't need to use that card for the booking, and you don't need to show it

California hire car insurance is odd in that USA locals can use their own local liability insurance. As an international tourist this is not your option. But you can self insure which is fine but the risk if it comes undone would be awful.
In the end I probably over insured so I didn't have to think about it. We drove a lot though. Lax, sf, Vegas, grand canyon.
