Must Do's in San Diego & Vancouver - 24 Hrs

Hi,

Travelling to San Diego & Vancouver for work & have a day spare in each city.

Any must do's in either city for general interest? Whether it be sight seeing, shopping, food & wine scene etc. Not a real museum buff so opening up the the Ozb community for inspiration.

Will need to include shopping at some stage, for the wife & kids, so any good outlet shopping centers please LMK.

Thanks!

  • San Diego - probably the zoo.
Vancouver - we did the hop on/hop off and walked through Stanley Park. Might be worth a look at the route and see what you think.

    • yeah zoo was really good.. and had the best vietnamese food in Vancouver

Hire a bike for Stanley Park and surrounds - an enjoyable day out, get to see more than walking.

      • Sounds like a good idea. I would consider the steepness of the trails. It was a while ago but I remember steepness :)

        • Use a road bike and keep to the perimeter of the island. Secure the bike to go up trails on foot.

Don't have anything to offer for Vancouver, but in SD we really enjoyed the USS Midway. Good for whole family IMHO. Zoo is good but from memory would be a whole day by itself.

    • You can, probably, cut down on what animals you want to see but it is a full day to see it all.

Do some research on the mexican food in San Diego, good food everywhere.

  • I have been researching Vancouver as I will be heading off there soon.

My top of the todo list is a 6 hours bike tour of Vancouver city, Gastown, Stanley park by YesCycle. That I feel will give me the overview of the main sights of the city and then go back to the ones I liked for more time.

Midway is good, then brewery crawl down to Barrio Logan to get some tacos

    or

go to La Jolla and walk down to Pacific Beach

    or

try to do every brewery in North Park and fall over 65% of the way through

    or

Cabrillo National Monument then Ocean Beach for beers and food and sunset

go to Whistler for a day

If I had 24 hours in San Diego I'd be hitting up Doug DeMuro for a lunch date to get my Doug score.

Edit: to answer the onslaught of PM's, yes, I would let him check out all of my quirks and features.

If you like outdoors, hire a car and head to the Sea to Sky Gondola. It's only 75 mins from the airport and there are loads of waterfalls and lookouts on the way, I think Whistler is a bit far for a day.

Wouldn't do any shopping in Canada if you're going to US at all, we used to drive to outlets @ Tulalip.

San Diego does have a big outlet mall right next to the Mexico border.

  • San Diego shopping - Las Americas premium outlets in San Ysidro. Just remember this is the last exit before you enter Mexico. Be on the lookout for the exit and save yourself the hassle of having to re-enter the US from Mexico. There is also Carlsbad Premium Outlets, in Carlsbad, a 45 minute road trip North of San Diego.

Not sure how old your kids are, but you also have Legoland in Carlsbad. As others have said, San Diego zoo is another option.

If none of this interests you, you can drive to Coronado and spend half a day on the beach there. You can actually see Mexico from there. Hilton's Hotel Del Coronado is a great place to grab a drink or two.

  • If you are in the La Jolla area of San Diego, I highly recommend Bobboi Gelato, and for dinner, head to El Chingon in the Gaslamp Quarter, or for cheap eats, Tacos El Gordo south of Chula Vista.

Very good, thanks so far for the ideas and inspiration…..@upended. Yes kids are Lego age as such, will head there I reckon.

  • If I had only one day to spend in San Diego, I'd go to San Diego Zoo Safari Park https://sdzsafaripark.org/
This is NOT the same as the San Diego Zoo.
