Car Sales Negotiations, Any Scope to Do So Anymore?

Hi all

I am looking to buy a new car soon and was wondering how the negotiation environment is in this era of low supply?

For example the last new car I went to one place and it was 50k for stock standard. Went to another place and got about 4K of add ins.

So does this sort of thing still happen now or is it fairly limited?

Basically hoping for roof racks and floor mats added on at the very least.

Pretty limited especially with very limited supply of the popular models. Floor mats possibly, roof racks no chance unless it was the most bog standard one out.

    • @Jimothy Wongingtons.Floor mats these days are pretty much standard in a lot of new vehicles.(not all though).Nissan they are standard.

    I was actually thinking about this yesterday;

Car salesmen have the balance of power now in the current market. Which is unfortunate

      Patience, because swings and roundabouts.

      • 100%. If you can wait, wait. If you can wait a little bit, better to buy brand new and wait then buy second hand at an inflated price

Please provide the coordinates of the rock you have been living under for the last 2 years.

    • This is going straight into my steal-bank

If you wait until Thursday 12th you’ll be able to get back to bargaining minimum 15% off RRP with free mats and a full charge.

    • Which year, 2024 or 2025?

      • Add a couple more.

I suspect we’ll be waiting for a quite a while, and IF discounting does come back it won’t be on EVs, only on cars that cost big $ in fuel bills.

  • They will make you feel like you're getting a deal if you have a trade-in

    Basically hoping for roof racks

Well, we can rule out RAV4 as the potential new vehicle

If you would like to test your negotiation skills try them at Honda or Mercedes first.

  • You can do better if you are ready to spend on paint & seat protector add on, front and rear camera addons and want to take finance.

Otherwise its like buying stuff from big super market where you buy, put it in your trolley, pay and walk away. Have you ever negotiate ever in Coles & wollies if you think price is not right to just dont put that stuff in your basket.

So right now if your dealer is committed with delivery dates then you got great deal otherwise just place order and wait.

Can come down to timing. If dealership has been a bit quiet, they might be prepared to do a sharper deal

Depends on purchase price. Don't expect big discounts off a $30,000 car. $80,000 you should be able to get something

Depends on availability. If asking for a discount on something 18+ months away, good luck

Be courteous and respectful and try your local dealer first

  • Depends on brand and model

  • All I can say is good luck with that one.It is extremely hard to get a discount in this environment.Dealers atm have the upper hand.Prices rising all the time does not make it easy.

  • For long dates on delivery, right now the dealer is just taking your interest to buy the vehicle by accepting $ 1K. Price will be determined one month before delivery.

  • go and have a look at whats actually available. dealers here in the last few weeks had limited stock and would hold for 3 days with a deposit, no discounting as they were lucky to have stock and it still seems to be moving quickly. this was on small suvs - bought a suzuki vitara.
