Catch Connect - Receive SMS for Free When Overseas

I contacted catchconnect re receiving sms when o/s and they said they have enabled international roaming again since last week.

I only need to receive sms for verification from banks etc when overseas and apparently it has no charge as it was a few years ago.

I forgot to screenshot the conversations and it disappeared very quickly.

Can anyone that is overseas at the moment verify this?

Can anyone that is overseas at the moment verify this?

    ok…

  • Why don't you check the CIS?

  • I too am interested to know the answer to the OP's question, as like the OP I only need to be able to receive texts when OS. The Critical Information summary (CIS) says the international roaming is on by default BUT to use it you need to purchase one of their data roaming packs. However, as 'receiving texts' is free it may be that these will come through even without the data pack.

  • I can now confirm that when I was overseas sms messages came through to my phone promptly, so I was able to do two-step verifications without any issues. I didn't purchase a roaming add on.
I could see that some photos were also sent via text messages, but nothing would download onto my phone, so understandably MMS messages won't come through unless you have added the roaming extras on.

    • Did you need to turn data roaming on? Thanks for sharing @Sagasu !

  • As I remember, I turned off mobile data on my catch sim on my phone (Samsung), but was still able to receive texts. Because my phone is a dual sim phone, I think I left the data roaming switch 'on' for the use of the local sim I purchased when travelling, but I'm pretty sure that had no effect on the use of my catch sim because it had the mobile data turned off.
My thoughts: When doing international travel with only your Catchmobile sim and without purchasing a roaming pack add on, you could turn off your mobile data and data roaming for peace of mind, but likely it is not necessary to do.

  • Was hoping this would work for me but no luck…not sure if Catchmobile has changed but it doesn't seem to connect to any o/s network and sms don't come through at all.

    • This is an issue when roaming Internationally and not having a subscribed International Roaming Pack.
Try manually selecting a 3G/2G network after searching all available networks and see if it works.

I did this and it worked for me (on Optus), but haven't tried with CatchConnect.

      • Thanks for the tip. I gave it a try but unfortunately no luck…there is only one 3G network available (JP DOCOMO) which it won't let me connect to.

        • Try this, not sure it would work, but give it a try:
Set preferred network type to '3G' manually, and then wait for the phone to select a network automatically.

          • @djoz: Thanks mate, I tried that and left it for a while but 'No service'.

  • I bought the add on for my daughter, does not work correctly, no call access, just SMS works.Waste of money.

  • Confirmed on live chat that SMS can be received while roaming for free without paying for pay as you go roaming add-on pack.
