Join the four Rikuzentakata travelers for a dive into the meaning of storytelling and communal memory.
As part of the Storymakers in Contemporary Japanese Art exhibition event series, the Japan Foundation, Sydney will be holding a free screening of Double Layered Town / Making A Song To Replace Our Positions at Palace Central in Chippendale.
Set in the town of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in the year 2031, Double Layered Town is a film directed by filmmaker Haruka Komori and based on a story by Natsumi Seo, planting the seeds for new folktales born in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
The town that once stood and the one built after the completion of land elevation work ─ four travelers who know neither head for Rikuzentakata in 2018 and listen to the local people, holding repeated dialogues and reciting stories together. The "succession" thus initiated creates a bridge to new encounters and communication.
