It's a great product, I been using for years. They can track my torrents and I get the money + movies. 😉
Everyone is collecting our data these days, just look at the permissions in apps and software. Just hope they at least have the courtesy to anonymize it first. Despite that these things still largely fulfill the function required for general use cases. If you genuinely are that worried about getting busted for something then by all means go pay a premium.

Yep and those apps collect that data when running & data is allowed & given to them. VPN's dont ask, they just have access to all data transmitted to/from your device.

So you obviously don't understand the issues with these VPN's. You are funneling all your data/traffic via their unknown network. They or anyone who compromises their network could easily perform a Man In The Middle attack and steal your encrypted data, including login details.
These VPN companies are cloaked in secrecy. They pretend they're doing you a favour. Throw up strawman arguments like yours to discredit actual legitimate concerns.
Yep I use them, I'll probably sign up to this as I haven't used PIA for 2yrs. But I'm well aware that they're worse then using https over the usual internet when it comes to privacy. Like Google, Apple, Facebook, etc I'm usually happy with the trade off..
But there are very very very stupid self proclaimed experts on herr.and elsewhere which claim these VPN companies are safe. They're not, they lie (e.g. the no logs claims) and anything you use them for, should be the same stuff you'd use for a plain http connection.
But cudos to their marketing teams, they're exceptionally good. Especially at getting producing fanbois to defend them.

Just install the open-source wireguard/openvpn clients instead of the company's versions. That's what I do - avoids that specific attack vector.
I also only limit the use of these cheap VPNs to low risk activities - e.g. for perusing ChannelBT.
Free $10 don't even need to use the service.
