For those interested, Colgate Total Advanced Clean Antibacterial Toothpaste does not have Phosphoric Acid, compared to Colgate Total Advanced Fresh. Otherwise, very similar ingredient list.

I bought this - and it stacks with this deal, Spend $15, Save 10% Off Select Colgate-Palmolive Products. The other Colgate varieties may as well.

    • Fwiw advanced whitening doesn't seem to

Colgate Total Advanced Clean Antibacterial Toothpaste(amazon.com.au) does not have Phosphoric Acid, compared to Colgate Total Advanced Fresh.

Is that a good or bad thing?

      • Phosphoric acid is found in every soft drink. It can degrade the teeth because it is acidic. For toothpaste, im not sure.

      • Phosphoric acid, also known as orthophosphoric acid, is a triprotic acid that exists as a dense liquid. It is an irritant or corrosive to the skin, eyes, and other mucous membranes of both humans and laboratory animals.

Don't rub it in your eyes.

      • Used in toothpaste, the amount is bound to be very small, and according to Colgate, if used, it is to adjust the pH. It is unlikely to be a big pro or con, more just to cater for individual preferences. For some with enamel erosion issues, or sensitivity – just seeing it on the ingredient list may be a put-off. So it is good to have a choice.

I wonder if it also affects the taste/flavour to a small degree, which some might prefer. Not sure, since the amount is so small.

    Slow day today

  • Genuine question: Why would I choose this instead of a home brand like https://www.aldi.com.au/en/groceries/health/health-detail/ps…?
Anything in particular in terms of ingredients / composition that makes Colgate better?

    • +3

Nothing, just paying for name, fluoride is the main active ingredient. Home brand cleaning stuff is chemically identical and 3x cheaper and people still want a brand because its "better," same with generic drugs etc.

    • I was of the same opinion, up until recently when I had it explained to me by the dentist that the antibacterial agent helps stop mouth bacteria from flourishing and causing associated problems, like plaque and periodontitis. If you have a great routine of brushing twice a day and you don't eat crap, you are probably fine with standard toothpaste. If you have some issues coming up then this might help. You could also use a anti bac mouthwash, but you may not need to.

I know there's a lot of maybes in that, but that's teeth for you.

    • Feels better to me. Like it coats my teeth and feels smoother compared to cheaper brands - though I haven't tried that specific Aldi product. It may be entirely psychological though

    • No idea, but potentially save $3 every 3 months?
Or just get a bag full of samples whenever you visit the dentist, potentially save $10 a year!

FYI, I am a big fan of colgate total original. I once bought advanced clean by mistake and thought it tasted so bad i couldn’t even make myself use the whole tube so it got relegated to use as shower cleaner. YMMV.

I stopped buying Colgate as it's made in Thailand. Now buy ALDI brand which is made in Australia.

  • Is antibacterial toothpaste good @Trance N Dance ? Is there any natural flora of the mouth that is good for us that we shouldn't kill?

  • +1

    everyday's price at ALDI

  • Curious to know if people rinse their mouth with water afterwards? I used to but not anymore after learning that it washes away the fluoride.

    • .I don't. Rinsing with water afterwards destroys the purpose of mouthwash
