Has Anyone Ever Used "Woolworths Drive Less Pay Less" for Car Insurance

Any warnings for me not to?
Currently my insurance with GIO is $2112 a year, but the woolies quote is $1035 a year.

Thinking of switching, just wondering if you guys have heard of any reasons not to ( just feels weird to go with woolies for a car insurance )

Thanks in advance

  • How many kilometres do you do a year?

    • Since Covid?

      • As of today for the next 12 months silly jv

        • No more than 10k

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Then declare that and don't ever go over it without telling them.

Good shopping and {thumbs up}(emoji) for avoiding the lazy man tax.

@MS Paint: Not good advice. When signing up you report the odometer reading and when claiming the odometer is reported (photo). There is flexibility and you can pay for more kilometres should you need it. Having said that I am a satisfied Woolies customer (4+ years). Before COVID and after we do about 6K km a year and my premiums are about one-third of the lowest comparable quote.

@MTAB: Same. I'm still way under my 10k for the year. $500 annual premium. I've probably clawed back about $300-350 so far using the 10% discount on our shopping so only about $150 for my car insurance for the year. But as always, be well versed in the small print and don't get all upset when you make a claim and they've got an out clause.

      Read the fine print!

      Then think again

      Its cheap for a reason

Woolworths don't provide the insurance. They have underwriters (Holland?)

Woolies is just the marketing front and another level of commission for the underwriters.

I’ve had Woolies Comprehensive insurance for a number of years and no problems. I have made one not at fault claim and they dealt with everything, organised the repairer and hire car and they checked whether I was satisfied after the repair was completed.

I was initially on the drive less pay less, but switched to unlimited km as the price was not significantly difference and I found that one year I underestimated my km’s. From memory if you go over your estimated km they still cover you, you just have a higher excess, however I could be wrong, best to check the PDS.

Correct, it’s another $1000 excess if you’re under or over the initial odometer reading or over it. Can easily add more KM’s as needed for a nominal fee. I just added an extra 3000km to mine as have done more driving than I thought I would and only cost me an extra ~$13.

I use it and works out cheaper for me..

Once online AND once in store every month

        • And if you have someone in your household with another Woolies telco or insurance product, you can do this TWICE for a total of 4 discounted shops.

On top of the 4% off discount gift cards.

  • Yes I used it and it's almost coming up for renewal again.

Unfortunately can't give you any useful information because luckily I haven't had to make any claims. Only thing to watch out for is to ensure you keep within the kms you specify at the start

I use it for my wife's car, have only had a claim for windscreen, was easy and quick.

Buy less/pay less is a great deal. I've got it and it's hard to see a downside. In fact, if you do end up driving more you can just update your odo.

How do I update my end odometer reading?
If you have a Drive Less Pay Less policy, you may be able to increase your end odometer reading online via My Insurance Portal.
To increase your end odometer reading, login to My Insurance Portal, click on ‘View Policy details’ for your desired Car policy OR click on ‘Need more kms?’ on your current odometer reading.
There might be some instances where your end odometer reading cannot be increased. If this is the case, or to decrease your end odometer reading, please contact us.

Never been an issue for me as I inevitably over estimate. If you're really being stingy, however, put a sticker on your windshield to remind you what odo reading you're trying not to hit so you can update if need be.

  • I have but over the years they're getting more expensive to the point of not worth it, probably looking at switching soon.

    • When my wife's Woolies drive less policy was due for renewal this year, the renewal premium had gone up quite a bit (call it a laziness/loyalty penalty).
So I just created a new quote/policy, for a lower price and claimed a $100 gift card via some promo code.

Their optional roadside assistance was about $80 extra, which seems pretty good value.
As mentioned above, you can adjust the policy if you underestimate your mileage.
And you get 10% off your grocery shop, once a month, which you can stack with discounted gift cards.

But, be aware that by default, their policy will auto renew next year.
I think that you need to phone up to cancel the autorenewal.

  • Thanks so much for the help guys.

I'm new to this since this is my first car. Just want to check so I do this properly. So do I call up, cancel my gio insurance [ is this immediate?] and then apply for the woollies one or do I transfer it?

Apologies for what are probably stupid questions, just new as I said and I don't wana muck it up.

I just paid for this months insurance, so should I call up now and say cancel at the end of the month and still be covered for the rest of August, or should I wait until its closer to sept?

edit; Nevermind. They say they refuse to cover my car because it has an aftermarket exhaust :(

I did during lockdown, and on a positive note, premiums were the cheapest by far, and qualified for the drive less due to lockdown. When I had to make a claim they were very easy to deal with.

On the negative side, I made an at fault claim (hit a kangaroo at dusk) and they declined to renew my insurance. So I think as long as you don't cost them any money they are more than happy to insure you.

Caused me a lot of hassle though when I had to find a new insurer as most of them ask "have you been refused insurance" and I had to answer yes, after which they flat out wouldn't insure me or charged me exorbitant premiums.

    • It seems some of these cheap insurance policies are single use.

    • +1

I can't believe you were deemed "at fault"? A roo jumping out of nowhere seems like exactly why you have insurance. Accident = not on purpose, to me.

  • Have used for years, never made a claim. It's cheap and easy to contact re account issues such as change amounts etc.

Pay by month, add windscreen cover, rental car and roadside assistance is worth it.

Note that recently I had lapsed the policy (not renewed) as car was out of rego for two months due repairs (not at fault accident, did NOT make any claim via Woolies but went thru at fault party insurance).

When I went to reimplement the policy, the quote system refused as there was no insurance cover "in the last 30 days".

I spoke with them and they confirmed.

Hack is to go to, say, NRMA..and apply for a policy…don't even need to pay a cent with cooling off period…establish coverage then go back to Woolies and obtain a quote again, as now you can establish current insurance.

    Silly I know.

  • I had this WW cover and cancelled after a few months. Call centre seems overseas and hard to get answers. Got cheaper insurance with much smaller excess from Australia Post. Cannot recommend.

  • When I was obtaining quotes for car insurance, some that require you to select a certain amount of kms, didn't increase the quote when you selected more kms… Yes I had plenty of time on my hands.

  • I'm with Woolworths Car Insurance, and they always quote cheaper than anyone else.

PLUS I get an additional discount for driving less.

Oh, and don't forget that customers also get a monthly 10% discount on their shopping at Woolworths supermarkets.

I am curious about a lot of replies stating KMs/yr below 10k. That seems very low, and I wonder why you'd pay the fixed cost of owning a car (rego, insurance, depreciation) for such minor use? Surely it would be better to hire a car or taxi when you need it instead of bothering donating rego to the govt for a car you're barely using.

    • +4

Yes, just take a taxi to the train station every single morning, then one in the afternoon to pick up the kids from school, then one back home, super convenient!

    • +1

im on this plan and I make the most of my local area, shops, errands, recycling machines, my car earns its keep

    • It would depend on why you're driving and where. I'm a sole trader who sometimes must visit my client. There aren't always buses, and for short runs, many taxi/Uber don't want it/cancel. A car also affords emergencies, which you can't do w/o a car. I personally consider a car a "moneypit", but sometimes a necessary evil.

  • I have used them; it is quality insurance from Hollard. I also like the 10% groceries savings once per month. In the first year, the pricing is good because they take off 10% or give bonus Everyday Rewards points worth good money, but in year two, the price goes up and the incentives may not be there. I therefore go off to Australian Seniors that year and save maybe $100. Following year I go back to Wollies again and get the better pricing and incentives again.
