      Who buys beige boxes anymore?

The updated term is whitebox. Meaning custom built Pc.

And as for the Safari-non compatibility, I think that's to give a hint that Mac users are excluded from the program.

Then why did you click a link titled The $15 Windows 8 Upgrade Offer?

        • +7

Well, if he didn't click on the link he wouldn't have been able to tell the whole world how he cool he is. I mean he owns a Mac!!! He's not an ordinary Windows users who isn't hip enough to pay a bucket load for overpriced tech. He's just so cool. If that's not the epitome of street cred, I don't know what is.

        • +1

yeah Steptoe is totally awesome, if you met him on the street you wouldn't even know how much awesomeness hit you in the face with a mac

        • Plenty of current Windows 7 users seem to consider it a downgrade as well.

        • Are you retarded?

if you've installed Win8 and used Metro UI you'd question whether your $15 is well spent…

btw. in 2009 you got a FREE upgrade to Win7 from Vista if you bought an eligible computer. Why are they making you pay now???

    • actually after a few months of using it, I'm confident I'm never going back to 7.

the metro UI is a bit sh!t — it is nice screen candy but serves little purpose but getting in the way of your desktop. perhaps if the icons actually showed more info (eg RSS tickers/live news videos/detailed weather/etc) it might be more useful. on top of that there are almost no apps for it yet, and most of the ones Microsoft provided are pretty flaky, (ie either don't work fully or at all), but it is a beta and major developers are yet to fully immerse themselves in the new OS. controls on a mouse-powered computer are not at all intuitive, when a person starts it first time, the rest takes some time getting used to. for a touch-screen device, win8 is really at home, and beats iOS4 for simplicity and elegance (don't be surprised to see some win8 inspired tweaks in iOS5 later this year).

also, access to the control panel/admin stuff is a bit too hard to get to — it should all appear by default in any admin accounts (and many of the admin controls aren't fully functional in limited users accounts even when you use the admin login), which is quite frustrating.

I've only had to do one refresh in 3 months of heavy use (50+hrs a week), albeit the refresh took a couple of hours to churn through it's stuff though the Microsoft messages said it would take just a few minutes!
$15 isn't much to pay once it has all the bugs removed, and this is a much bigger upgrade from win7 than that was from vista.

they are upgrading from windows 7 home premium to windows 8 pro.

that may explain the $15 cost.

  • which PC's can you buy? anyone have a list?
