Lowest price so far according to 3x camels.

I got the clone version of this the Brateck MDS-01 at $65 shipped from Amazon and I am pretty happy with it. It's currently unavailable, sold out I think.
Not sure what the Blue Compass would be superior at maybe it's quieter, but the Brateck is pretty quiet so the Blue Compass would have to be silent to be worth the extra.
Maybe the Compass has some more durable parts, but the Brateck is all metal where it matters so I still feel it's better value personally.

i have the Brateck too, love it.

    • Yup 100% agree it's a great value mic arm.

    • Ditto.

    • Agree. Great value for the price

    • Unfortunately no stock at Amazon or free shipping anywhere else on Brateck MDS06-1

  • i have one of these it holds teh microphone

  • How is this vs. the Rode PSA1?

    • I've got the Rode PSA1+ from what I can tell, the PSA1+ vs the blue compass there are few differences some of the notable ones are :
      - Dual screw locking mechanism for the microphone mount on the PSA (twist in opposite directions and it's locked)
      - Wider base for attachment to the desk
      - Better finishes on the PSA imo (high-quality brushed aluminium, branding font looks nicer)
      - Nylon sleeve with integrated cable management reduces noise/friction from the boom. (the integrated cable management is really nice too, it's easy to pull the cable off and get back on which I need to do on a regular basis) only the plus version of the PSA has this.

Is it worth the added $20 (currently on sale for around $150), personally I say it is.

      • Oh that sleeve is nice. That gap in the non plus version is unsightly to me for some reason haha

The main reason I'd recommend the compass over the psa1 is because the screw is much lower. That helps protect your mic's usb cable (I don't use xlr but that's probably a different use case) I've had a few mics get destroyed cos I've swivelled the mic around and it's damaged the usb connection

        • There's actually a channel that goes around all the joints right down to the screw to stop the USB cable getting frayed.

      • Are you able to mount the PSA1+ behind the monitor and have it come over a monitor and get it close enough to your mouth for a dynamic mic (like a Rode Podmic)?

No not really, you'll definitely want a longer / taller boom for that.

  • This or psa2 for $20 more

Its a boom arm, for the extra $20 you are just paying for the rode logo as opposed to Blue, or the other mentioned Brateck.

  • I've gone through a few boom arm in the last 2 years whilst WFH.

Overhead boom arms like this can be tricky and it's using a complete different mechanism compared to the likes of Rode PSA1.

This boom arm was completely usable for my situation, why? Because when it's being pulled too far to the sides, it'll loose the balance and the whole arm will sag. Of course you can tighten the levers on the joints but that defeats the purpose of having a boom arm that you can reposition easily after using.

I'm using the Shure MV7 which isn't a heavy mic, compared to Rode Procaster. Heavier mics will be not suitable for this boom arm at all.

    • So are you recommending the psa1+? I have the blue and it does sag a lot with my rode procaster

      • PSA1 or PSA 1+ are pretty much the same arm. I'd prefer the PSA1+ minus those logos. I had the Procaster and it's impossible to use it with the Blue unless it just have it hanging vertically or tighten the joints at the MAX level.

PSA1 worked for heavy mics like SM7B so it'll work for Procaster too. I am however using the Elgato Wave Arm LP for my MV7. I made this choice for the support reasons but purely wanting a low profile boom arm. It's working really well for my day to day use case. Easily positioning the mic by swinging into the spot and I love how I can minimise the view obstructions when I'm on meetings.

        • I want that Elgato wave arm too but I was worry if it would get in the way, knock things off. Is there anything you don’t like about it?

          • +1

@trantonz: I think the LP arm is great if you have a top mount camera and don't want the mic to be in view.

The small issue I have with this LP Arm is that the locks on the elbows/joints need to be pretty tight if you have a heavy mic. Elgato said don't over tighten it so I am quite careful only tighten it to the point where it holds it without dipping.

"I have the blue and it does sag a lot with my rode procaster"

Make sure you check the rated weight in the specifications of each mic arm. If your mic is under the rated weight, when setup properly you should have full adjustment and the mic should stay in place in any position.

    • "Of course you can tighten the levers on the joints"

Yes you tighten those but you should not be over tightening them they are there to provide friction which helps but not to increase the weight capacity of the arm.

"I've gone through a few boom arm in the last 2 years whilst WFH."

You might be over tightening and relying the joint levers to hold the mic up, which is why you have gone through so many arms in 2 years.

Did you try adjusting the tension screw in the base? On my Brateck arm there is a small philips head screw which you tighten to increase or decrease tension. You have to take the arm off it's base/mount to access it.

There was a useful review on the now taken down Amazon AU page for the Brateck arm I have. It mentioned you need to slightly loosen all the levers on the joints, then straighten the whole arm before adjusting the tension screw otherwise it will have no effect.

Also the Brateck arm I have is rated at 1kg maximum. So if you put anything heavier than that it will likely sag.
