RTX 4000 Series GPU Performance Leaks. Will You Still HODL 3000 Series?

The Nvidia 4000 series cards performance has been leaked today, see; https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/wcj0tu/leaked_tim…

3070→4070 having a 47% improvement
3080→4080 having a 65% improvement
3090→4090 having a 86% improvement

This all comes along with a significantly higher power draw, so you may need a new PSU!

I know everyone seems to be HODL'ing, however with 3000 series cards dropping, and 4000 series rumoured to come out late this year / early next, is it even worth HODLing? keen to hear ozbargains thoughts :)

  • That's a crazy jump in performance for the 4090 for only 25% more power, is that realistic?

    • Yeah, 25% from power increase, 20% from die shrink, 20% from architectural improvements, 19% from GDDR6X bandwidth improvements ;)

      Now lets see how AMD fare!

  • I grabbed the 12gb 3080 for $1099 the other day. It'll do me for a while and by time I'm ready to upgrade again, hopefully the 4080 has been out long enough that it's below $1000. I expect the 40 series to be the new PS5 for the scalpers so likely the 4090s and 4080s will be sold out everywhere for like 6 months after launch anyways. chip shortage has been over for a few months and still hard to get PS5s.

    Synthetic benchmarks don't translate into real world gaming results, drivers can be tweaked to get ridiculous scores without actually having a better card. That said, this isn't particularly surprising. The 3090 wasn't much faster than the 3080 but it has massive amounts of VRAM for more productivity purposes. Smashing that card out of the park doesn't mean much.

    The 3080 was more than 80% higher than the 2080 (and was actually a cheaper RRP on release, although we all know how relevant RRP was). However that was more like 50% improvement at 4K and less in other games. DLSS and RT were vastly improved too though.

    nVidia threw in something like 60% more cores and 80% more ROPS in these cards, if that can translate directly into frames then great, these cards will blow us all away. Otherwise it doesn't mean much until they are in the hands of gamers.

    Disclaimer: I'm totally hoping the 4070 doesn't smash the 3080 because I own a 3080. It would be good to see a comparison to the new 12GB 3080 though, that is basically as fast as the TI version.

    They always oversell each generation vs previous generation performance gains before release to hype up the launch.

    They had similar numbers for the 20xx vs the 30xx and the real world benchmarks after launch didn't even come close to what they said before launch.

    You will be lucky to get 20-30% performance improvements at twice the price if not more.

  • The more useful assessment is

    4070 = 10,000 in TSE
    4080 = 15,000
    4090 = 20,000

    Compared to

    3070 = 7,600
    3080 = 10,000
    3090 = 14,000

    So, the 4070 will at least match the 3080 and if stories are to be believed, even the 3090. The 4080 will certainly beat the 3090, and the 4090 will leave the previous generation in the dust.

    You can see why they would look to only launch the 4090 first off - it sits way above their current cards and they can try and gouge people for as much as possible. Once the 4080 is out then all 3xxx cards need to be priced below it, and the 4070 will make any 3xxx cards <US$500 cards.

    However AMD are unlikely to play in this game and it gives them the scope to twist a knife in Nvidia's side. They would love to take some market share.

    • 3090 = 14,000

      Yeah using bloody liquid nitrogen to overclock the absolute living hell out of it.

      RTX 3090's are around 10000 - 11000.

      • I was being generous - the reality is the two tier jump in performance means that the 3xxx prices get gutted as soon as the 4xxx are available. Thus provided they can't manage to sell out their backstock of 3xxx cards, the prices HAVE to fall significantly.

        The key metric is what the warehouse stock looks like - providing that stays high they are going to have to liquidate at a loss soon. And if you manage to miss the sweet spot, the 4xxx cards will still be there to buy.

        Competition and the death of Proof of Work is going to make this generation very different from the last.

  • Please also include the comparison to 2080 generation… :)

  • When's the expected realease date of the 4000's series GPU's? Must be close now,..

    • Arent they saying 4090 later this year, 4070/80 not until next year?

    I can't HODL it no moar, open da floodgates!

    The later we get in the 3000 series, the more often people say 'Hold for the 4000'. With the shortages through most of it's life, I reckon a lot of people have taken this path, thus demand will be very high.
    Not to mention Nvidia have realised people will pay to the moon to get the hardware, so they'll put MSRP up even further.
    With these powers combined I reckon the 4k launch will be a mess of gouged prices and moon logic.

    I got a 3080 on launch, I'll be happy with it till the 5000 series. Good luck other folk.
