Do You Rate Vodafone/TPG > Optus/Telstra?

I've always been with Telstra/Optus for my mobile and I'm looking to switch to TPG as the plans are much cheaper and Optus sport is no longer free.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. So TPG mobile users, how good (or bad) is TPG mobile network?

Is the internet slower? Do you have less coverage? Or is it fairly comparable?

True OZB user is on Belong or Amaysim.

    • Belong uses Telstra network… thanks!!

Belong does not use full telstra network. Boost does.

    • Why not circles.life? $20 for 30GB or $30 for 100GB seems cheaper than both of them. What's missing?

      https://www.circles.life/au/thebigfreeze

      • Belong currently have for the first year double data stack. ($35 / $45 plans)

        so $35 = 80gb
        $45 = 200gb

        No bill shock with Belong.

        • Have you had bill shock with Amaysim or TPG?

          • @FareEvader: Not personally, no. However according to each:
Amaysim - No bill shock when data usage is exceeded (data is paused)
TPG - PAYG 10c/MB; or if insufficient credit when data usage is exceeded, data is paused/inactive

  • Boost uses full Telstra network.
    Woolworths uses Telstra wholesale network.
    Belong uses?

      Telstra Wholesale.

You cant just ask random people about quality of telco. Depends on your area, and where you move.

Its like your mate hot young girlfriend not necessarily good for you, just saying.

    • I move around a lot so I'm ok with a general response. Thanks.

      • I move around a lot

In that case, Telstra / Boost for the full retail network coverage and VoLTE / VoWiFi. If you don't stray too far into the never-never, the Telstra Wholesale network (Belong, Woolworths, Aldi, etc) might suffice, noting that they don't have VoLTE and VoWiFi yet (supposedly from late September through to late December, all going well).

For where I need coverage, mostly in and around Canberra, I would rate them Telstra > Vodafone > Optus. A bit further out, I would rate them Telstra > Optus > Vodafone.

If the proposed arrangement between Telstra and TPG gets up, that will change things a lot.

    • Agreed with the hot young girlfriend, part :)

  • Voda is consistently pretty rubbish with their resellers but it’s cheap as chips. I’ve can’t remember if the Voda full service had any major problems but their reception in regional areas wasn’t much chop back in the day, you had to stand outside. TPG and Telstra are merging so that’s going to be interesting.

It's not a merger, more like providing customers access to each other networks.

These type of agreements happens from time to time.

The last time this type of agreement was back in 3 Mobile (Pre Vodafone and Hutchison) days when 3 Mobile had access to Telstra's 3G network which ended when the merger of Vodafone and 3 Mobile happened back in 2011.

  • I like that Telstra allows calls on Google devices so often try to port out and in to get a deal and stick with it, wish cheaper carriers offered that

  • Number 1 priority is $$ for me. After Number 0 of service working at the bare minimum standard.

And generally speaking vodafone is cheaper $$ wise than Telstra (assuming you aint comparing MVNOs).

  • Telstra would be number one for me if they weren't so expensive.

go boost over wholesale retailers. i have 2 side by side, one on an older phone and one on a newer phone, the old phone using a boost sim is noticeably faster than the aldi mobile sim in the new phone.

i wouldn't consider optus, vodafone or telstra proper, too expensive for what you get, plus at least optus, probably the other two as well, hire recently disgraced corrupt politicians, so there's that.

    • I hate corrupt politicians too but a bargain is a bargain lol
