Samsung LSP7T Projector + Dolby Atmos Soundbar

I'm on the verge of buying Samsung LSP7T laser projector + 990qb soundbar to take advantage of $800 cash back. However, LSP7T doesn't support dolby atmos and dolby atmos immersion is the reason I want to buy 990qb (without spending $1500+ on a sound system).

My questions are (if any expert can chip in) :

  1. I was told it doesn't matter about the source (TV or projector) as long as the soundbar is dolby atmos? Or rubbish and we still need the source/TV to be dolby atmos compatible?

  2. Any body has the projector can give me their first hand experience or opinion about the projector pros and cons? 4k picture quality, os, etc?

  3. Any other projector around price point worth to consider (4k native is preferred). Should I wait for dolby atmos compatible projector to be released?

Thanks in advance

  • Without overhead and surround speakers you're not getting any real benefit from ATMOS.

  • Overhead may be possible if i hung the rear speakers on wall? Doubt I will do it but definitely surround rear speakers are include. My biggest question is if the source (projector) is not dolby atmos compatible (is says Dolby Digital plus only), will the Samsung q990b dolby atmos capability will be a waste? Thanks

  • The projector is bright and clear.
OS is like any Samsung TV, actually a bit slower/sluggish than the TV but doesn't really deter from the experience.

    Now the negatives:
    - Like any other Tizen OS TV, no eAAC support meaning most of mkv files will refuse to play (even if there is a second audio track TV won't play the file).
    - No auto focus or auto keystone, this one is a bit of a shocker considering much cheaper options like Xiaomi and JMGo have these. Additionally the focus is very slow.
    - Just like other Tizen OS, there's a lack of Apps (so for example the eAAC issue would have been fine if we could install Kodi or VLC).

Other than that, I'd highly recommend the projector, specially for the current discounted price.
We side by side compared it with a Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro, and even on just normal wall this blew the Xiaomi out of the water. Main thing was the extra contrast and brightness, but the extra clarity of 4K definitely helps as well.

Just keep in mind that it cannot go too small, there is a minimum size for projection and it's about 80 or so inch which is huge.

It supports passthrough on ARC so if you can play content with the sound you want, it should work fine on your receiver. As mentioned above, you will need some way to play this content first.

    • Thanks much, sorry for another noob question. What soundbar /sound system do you use it with? Worth 3k price tag? Thanks

      • Currently none. The projector built in speaker is actually half decent and has even got a bit of bass to it.

Still figuring out where to put it, then will decide about the sound system.
If you are unsure what to do, I suggest utilising JB Hi-Fi 10% discount if it's still around and buy the cheapest sound bar (it's about $199 and becomes $179 after 10%). Then you maximise your discount on the projector and can decide what sound bar or system to get later on. It doesn't need to be Samsung this way.

And keep in mind you will always pay a premium for soundbar compared to a proper home theatre. Just for the form factor.

  • Did you miss out on this deal (or am I just blind and the deal is still on)? Or is there an even better deal right now?

    • Missed that one. Hoping for a repeat :p
