Are There Any Creative Ways of Savings on Your Myki/Public Transport Costs?

Hi all,

Has anyone found any creative ways of saving on Myki travel costs?

I commute 3 days a week so a yearly isn't going to be a good option for me.

I'm thinking options like cash back, gift cards etc.

Would love to hear your experiences!

Thanks

Hiver 5% cash back on public transport

    • Nice one thanks, I don't bank with them but seems like a good option to do a large topup

  • Move to Sydney

The only scheme I know of is:
https://www.ptua.org.au/members/offers/ and that is on yearly…

or if the Company you work for is eligible for Commuter Club

    • Thanks, I'm an infrequent users to a yearly pass is a bit overkill for me

  • Don't tap the thingo when you get on.

Will probably cost more in the long run

      • What's the fine like? ~$100? If you're a regular public transport using in Sydney you can hit that amount in about two weeks.

Get yourself a carers card, then use that to get yourself a carers myki for half priced travel weekdays and free travel on the weekend.

LOL at the down voters….. Upset because you can't get a carers card clearly!

If you can't legitimately get a carers card than isn't this just the same as not tapping on/fare evading?

Not since amex stopped small shop.

    Go to work before 7am

      Does this still exist?

myki website says before 7.15am so even better

        • Ah I has no idea about this! I'm not usually in that early but every odd day I might be able to get in that early.

This. Essentially half price travel, was good motivation for me to have an early start and I could avoid the evening peak hour travel home too if I'm lucky :)

@Craze: avoids all of those coughs and sneezes in packed trains!

        • Do you have to complete the trip by 7.15? I touched on at 6.58 and was charged full fare.

@rickb: Need to touch off by 7:15

Share a Myki with someone who uses PT on different days to you.

Use Google Pay on an Android phone and once your Myki is negative instead of topping up delete the card and create a new one.

If you have to be at work any three days a week, you may be able to get away with a weekly Myki plus a daily. So, in week one travel on Wed, Thus and Fri and in week 2 Mon and Tuesday for a weekly fare. Then use the daily fare for another day in week 2.
However, the best deal is to touch off in the CBD stations before 7.15 am, which gets you a free travel. I have always travelled free on my way in to work, until Covid. Now still WFH.

  • Think it's all been covered but no one has mentioned that you can 'pause' a myki pass. Helpful if you're going in on consecutive days. However there is time to wait before they issue a replacement, so you can either have 2 going to alternate or use myki money whilst waiting for the pass replacement.

If you top up a mobile myki with a pass, you can request a physical replacement of the card, saves on card fee.

  • When I last visited Melbourne almost no-one tapped on at the trams outside the free-zone, so I'm surprised that theres someone actually paying and looking to save!
