Looking a Good Wired CCTV or CCTV & Alarm Package

Hi looking ideas for an upgrade to our 4 camera system and possibly Hills R8 alarm, previously installed by previous house owner 10years ago.
Alarm seems to power up ok but no instructions with it , and cameras work but must be 720p or something not the greatest but colour at least. Also no instructions with them but I see a 500mb hard drive.

Any ideas on what to look out for camera wise , alarm wise with app support and if there is a same brand combo that work together possibly?!

In Perth also ,if there's any recommendations on installers too , cheersmany thanks 👍

  • But this is OZBargain, we don't do "Good", we do "Cheap" :P

    • Good and cheap even better! 👍

  • In the same boat and also Perth. (What is it with people selling homes and leaving no instructions or passwords.)
6 camera X2 system and Hills Alarm
Had a airtasker chap come in and get it all up and running but wont link to the Hills alarm.
Apparently much easier and less costly if you have a landline, not just mobile.
While it works, given up on it as unable to rewind or set for movement activated etc so will likely just get RAC out to do a service and recommendation.

    • Hahaha yes very frustrating ,just got a message saying you can install a commnav device to help with app use ,but if you get newer cameras than ours ,you have to get a whole new camera setup for modern cameras

  • +1

    Hey OP,

For security cameras I'd assume the ones you have are analog style, if you're happy to re run the cables I'd suggest getting an Ethernet/network based system. PoE (power over Ethernet) makes life super easy as you just run one cable to the camera and it carries both the video data and power. I've used both reolink and annke cameras (each camera is $100 or less). The PoE network switch is around 70$ for a 4x port +1 uplink. Then I have a refurbished HP desktop ($300) that I run as the server for the video using Blue Iris as the software. Have installed similar systems at both mine and my folks place. Works great. Checkout a YouTube channel 'the hookup' as he does a bunch of camera head to head comparisons and in depth guides on how to configure the software.

As for the alarm, have just upgraded an old mess d8 to a new bosch 6000. Was dead easy to re-use the existing 4 core wiring. An entire new system + extra keypad was under $1000 from cheap alarm parts. The app to monitor, arm, disarm and program it from your phone is around $10 a month.

    • Wow ,cheers thanks very much for the excellent feedback,I' was assuming only a qualified electrician can install it for insurance purposes or some building regs.but you've definitely saved a few quid doing it that way,is that the hills company that does the monitoring for that price or is that the camera monitoring sorry?

      • Yeah, some states require you to have a licenced alarm person install the system. Not sure about WA sorry. The wiring isn't difficult though, and because you already have a Hills system you probably already have 4core wiring that you can just replace the end points with new bits (ie new pir sensors, new base unit etc).

That subscription is with myalarm / ifobb. They work with bosch systems, not sure if they work with other ones too. Have a browse through the cheap alarm parts website, they include quite a bit of diy info alongside the products they sell. I've found them to be great to deal with.
