Do Socket Testers Work?

Hi guys I have an issue where my laptop or sonos one's when plugged in will feel staticy when i touch them. I've tried using another new powerboard and straight into the socket but still happening.

Wondering if something like this actually works before I justify calling out a sparky.

Cheers

    You need a new earth.

    Report all shocks and tingles

I know climate change seems to be getting worse these days, but you're calling it a bit early aren't you?

Yes but if the current one gets too re-volting we might need to amplify our efforts. Or switch to a new ohm…..

  • I had this problem with my Surface Book 3, turn the plug around that goes into the adapter 180 degrees and it should fix it.

The same thing can probably be done with your Sonos adapter plug. Is it something like this? https://www.sonos.com/en-au/shop/power-cable-i

Actually that might be it for op assuming he has a surface. And not referring to the gpo itself tingling. I had same issue with surface pro 3, and laptop 4. Cannot believe it’s 2022 and this issue hasn’t been addressed…

  • You need a sparky, but in the mean time get a socket tester from Jaycar and see if there are any power circuits in the house that are safe to use.

Check your power distribution board to see if you have RCD protection on the circuits and if not then you will need to replace all of the fuses or circuit breakers so you do not in theory electrocute yourself.

  • christ mate, did you post this from the staticy laptop? lmfao what a gangsta

OP is the socket tester. It works, as "static" was reported.

  • At least someone has bothered to put a RCM on it; so it's either legit or the people behind it are even more sinister than the usual cheap dodgy component sellers, who at least don't know they need the RCM.

  • the linked one has a chinese male plug. it will be upside down if you plug it into a wall.
but something like that will test if the socket is wired correctly and also lets you test the rcd in your switch box.

If it's a Mac, it's not a bug but a feature. I've lost count of the number of times I've been zapped.

  • If your device has two prongs, then this is generally expected behaviour and while annoying is not a safety issue. If your device has three prongs, including a ground prong, then generally this is a problem.
