POP3 Email Working These Days?

Using both Windows 10 Email and Thunderbird as the client. Gmail and Yahoo mail as the provider. Is it broken in 2022? I keep getting can't communicate with server error on thunderbird. With Windows mail the account is in there but sending and receiving doesn't happen. About to give up after a couple of hours. I'm able to access emails from the browser but not POP3 client.

Edit.. Got it working on different laptop, don't know why it won't work on same operating system different machine…

For Gmail pop3 and IMAP is off by default. You have to turn them on in settings.

  • For gmail, you have to set up the client to accept the password via the web. The latest version of Thunderbird has a gmail specific account option.

For yahoo, you have to use an app specific password.

  • I am fairly certain they blocked it, insecure access is no longer allowed.

You need to use OAUTH now.

  • Cheers. To be clear I set up the Gmail settings to accept pop3.
In Thunderbird I used the gmail option. In windows mail I used the pop/Imap option as the gmail / yahoo option wouldn't connect.

Edit.. Not sure why I didn't do this before but got on a different laptop and successfully setup the account using Windows mail. So it's a problem with my laptop? Both run windows 10. Any ideas? This one took me through the gmail sign in process where as the other one seems to skip this. Almost like it's an old version of the software?

    • Yep, new-ish versions of the mail client will know how to handle the gmail sign in process. The old versions won't connect.

      • I just checked the windows version of both and the laptop that won't work is PRO the other is HOME, both are the same version. I did uninstall and reinstall the windows mail app as part of the process but didn't help.

        • Try installing the latest version of Thunderbird on the machine that isn't working. I know that the latest version of Thunderbird works with gmail POP3 because I am using it. It was a PITA to set up tho.

  • I I use POP3 with Gmail on Windows through thunderbird.

You'll want to make sure POP is set up here:
    https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/fwdandpop

    1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since

You'll want to set it up as

    Server Name pop.gmail.com
    Port 995
    Connection Security SSL/TLS

    For outgoing:

    Server Name smtp.gmail.com
    Port 465
    Connection Security SSL/TLS

I can't really give you any more advice without you telling us what error message you're getting.

  • With Gmail, for a few weeks now, with less secure email apps you now have to use 2 factor auth then generate a unique password and use that in the password field of your pop client account settings and not your Gmail password. There is no other way to make it work in less secure apps anymore

My outlook stopped receiving pop and it took me ages to find the solution

  • I have had Thunderbird & Gmail working together for yonks, maybe a decade or more
Everytime I install an OS I just copy over 2 folders and I get my T/Bird just the way it was b4
If it was updated since you did the back-up, it will just do the software update, that is all
But I back-up my 2 folders every couple of months anyway.
I use 'Everything' to find the folders - https://www.voidtools.com/support/everything/
    C:\Program Files (x86)
    C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming
    I hope this helps :p
