Can you use a genuine cylinder to swap with what they are offering?

    • +7

More so, can you swap from sodaking to Sodastream cylinders after that….

    • This is what I want to know too.

  • May be unrelated but Sodaking’s cola syrup taste like absolute garbage.

    • I love their cola. So much better than the weird taste of Sodastreams pepsi syrup.

      • Did the Pepsi Max change flavour? I remember loving it when I first tried it, it tasted just like post mix and now I find it tastes weird

      • +1

Actually I just checked I have the sugar free version. I apologize for the slander. But I do prefer the actual Pepsi syrup, tastes exactly like bottled/canned Pepsi.

        • Agree, just takes a bit to find the correct ratio. For me is the second line of the blue cap.

    • I've been trying to find something similar to the frantelle zero sugar sparkling waters, or the schweppes infused cans…

The Sodaking lemon flavour tastes like cleaning solution.

      • You can get Zero Sugar Solo, Sunkist, Schweppes Lemonade, Passiona and Lemon Lime & Bitters syrup bottles from Woolworths if any of those take your fancy.

        • Yeah I'm slowly working through them. Some of the ones I've tried so far are much heavier than the sparkling water flavours. I've gotten used to not having such a heavily flavoured drink.

  • Is the spare cylinder full or empty?

    • +4

Surely full, that's how it works for the other places I've been

    • Yes, the spare cylinder is full.

    • Assuming you are in his delivery zone. Last time I looked I am not

    • They don't in deliver in 3000…

      • +2

The cbd is too much of a shit show for parking. Their model also relies on people leaving empties outside their door which doesn't really work with large high rise apartments.

    • You're wrong.
Any age group can drink water.

  • Can you use these on a soda steam machine?

  • I still have not used the one bottle from the $19 eBay plus deal of soda stream

  • Semi related but does anyone know where I can return several of these cylinders for the refund? I bought a few outright and forgot to bring my empties, so now I'm stuck with a few.

    • I don't think you can. I've not seen where you can return for a form of deposit back…. hopefully I can be corrected though, I have 4 sitting at home

    • -1

I've swapped out 4 at once at Kmart before no issues. I can't imagine it would be a problem at Spotlight.

      • Wants return for refund/deposit, not for a swap….

      • When you say "swapped out", how many new bottles did you buy at the time? 4 or 1?

    • I would be up for buying an empty to refill on the cheap, if you can be bothered with the transaction

    • Could always throw them on ebay/gumtree to see if anyone wants them?

  • +1

I've got an empty, but wondering if this is cheaper than buying bottles of soda water - how many litres of soda (roughly, I know you can gas more or less each time) will I get out of a canister?

How do I maximise this? Regular c02 bottle with an adaptor?

    • Definitely beats plastic waste/recycling costs. Or even lugging bottles home.
We go through loads and loads of sparkling water.
Fill the cylinders from our rain water tank and carbonate them before putting in cupboard/fridge/beside table.

      • +1

Your rainwater tank is that clean? I hear some people's aren't clean enough to flush a toilet

        • use Britas filtered water daily for my Sodastream & Easiyo (home made yogurt makers)

    • +1

Supposedly they make up to 60L of soda, but this depends a lot on how fizzy you want it. I usually get around 50L. Certainly not as cheap as buying soda drinks at the supermarket, but I like not having to deal with plastic waste or stacks of cans.

    • +6

How do I maximise this? Regular c02 bottle with an adaptor?

If you drink a lot of sparkling water, that's the best way to go.

A 6kg CO2 tank now costs $119, the adaptor hose is $50. Delivery was $20 to Brisbane when I ordered. So a 6kg tank plus adaptor would be $189.

If you refill the small bottles, at this discounted SodaKing price ($14/400g), 6kg of gas will cost $210. At the normal price ($20/400g), 6kg of gas would cost $300.

The real savings comes in when you finish the 6kg and need to refill. It's about $65 to refill 6kg. That's $235 cheaper than the normal $20/400g price of the small bottles.

You can also get smaller 2.6kg cylinders if 6kg is too bulky to store.

      • Do you know if it possible to refill the soda stream gas bottle? It would be good if you could refill the gas bottles rather than have a big gas cylinder in the kitchen

        • I think kegland has an adaptor for that as well

          https://www.kegland.com.au/deluxe-sodastream-cylinder-adapte…

im not going to explain how to do it, but i mean soon as you have a connection for a sodastream cylinder to a normal thread its easy. you just have to be careful with pressures so it doesn't blow up in your face (read: you need a regulator and common sense)

          • +2

@MrThing: Nah, it's really simple - don't need a regulator. Just screw the little bottle to the big bottle, turn it upside down and slowly turn the dial on the big bottle to get the gas flowing.

Edit: handy video showing how you do it: https://youtu.be/MeopdQRJPTA

(You turn it upside down so you get liquid co2 rather than gas into the little bottle; you start off slowly cos soda stream ones have a valve or something that closes if too much goes through at the beginning. If you want it to fill more put the little bottle in the freezer first.)

There's a little release valve on the adapter if you are worried about unscrewing a bottle under pressure (you shouldn't be, it just hisses, the early adapters didn't even have this valve - it was added to let off the pressure quickly if you accidentally triggered the soda stream valve closing thing).

Been using this set up for years - very easy, very safe. And you don't need to keep a big bottle in your kitchen!

            • +1

@MrDixit: 2.6kg tank- This is what I've been using for the last 2 years

            • @MrDixit:

Just screw the little bottle to the big bottle, turn it upside down and slowly turn the dial on the big bottle to get the gas flowing.

It's really easy on my SodaKing bottle but a bit harder on the newer SodaStream bottles with the valve you mentioned (which is designed to prevent/slow down refilling).

Not sure if the new SodaKing bottles have the valve. The KegLand sodastream cylinder doesn't so if you're after a new cylinder and intend to refill it, that'd be a good choice.

            • @MrDixit: Nice so it's a liquid

Great find, wondering if anywhere in eastern suburbs.

  • My order just got cancelled!

Looks like it's not a live stock level as the store now shows OOS.

  • +2

From what I can tell it's more convenient to get a sodastream adapter, and then a large CO2 cylinder. BOC had a reasonable deal:
    https://www.boc.com.au/shop/en/au/d-plan-carbon-dioxide-food

    • Where do you get the soda stream adaptor? Do you use the big bottle to fill the soda stream bottles or do you connect straight to the machine?

  • you guys use small cylinders.

gee, better go buy an adaptor for a 6kg cylinder and see the savings roll in

    • Yeah some of us still like the use of our natural birth given teeth 😁

      • I mean… You don't have to put syrup in it…

        • Apparently even soda water isn't great for your teeth

          • @Jackson: There's a belief out there that unflavoured sparkling water is bad for teeth which is understandable as there's some carbonic acid from the dissolved CO2, but the American Dental Association has this to say:

According to available research, sparkling water is generally fine for your teeth—and here's why. In a study using teeth that were removed as a part of treatment and donated for research, researchers tested to see whether sparkling water would attack tooth enamel more aggressively than regular lab water. The result? The two forms of water were about the same in their effects on tooth enamel. This finding suggests that, even though sparkling water is slightly more acidic than ordinary water, it's all just water to your teeth.

I only pay $10 for swap overs.

    • How ? Does it involve performing a little dance ?

      • No, I order refills online and they get delivered next day.

  • Following

  • Does anyone know if they make smaller bottles that 1L bottles that can be gassed? I don't drink a lot of soft drink, but I also want to avoid the plastic waste, and even regass genuine coke (if I open a bottle it's flat by half way). Hence gassing up smaller quantities would be good, but the bottles have a really wide opening, and only seem to come in one size

  • Just checked and deal is still active with my local store re-stocked.

    • And they've cancelled my order again.

      • Well that sucks. Actually, this deal has expired and I have posted the new deal here.
