People that dismiss decades of harsh lessons learned around electrical safety are a dime a dozen, and it depresses me.

People have gotten so used to using electricity that they think it's safe. It isn't. It will kill you, very easily, and it will hurt the whole time you're dying.

Again, for the sake of a few dollars, it will kill you. Very easily. And it will hurt the whole time you are dying.

"Unsheathed pins won't hurt me". It's not about you. It's about the kid that comes over in 4 years with a mate. Long past you and your superior intellect have forgotten that you bought cheap crap for your house.

If it is not legal. Do not buy it.

        • Yeah red tape exists for a reason. If it's safety compliance red tape it's probably also a good reason. The individual experiences claiming 'mine is fine' just put others at risk.

          • +1

@gakko: You clearly don't work in a corporate environment. Red tape exists for a reason… haha sure it does.

      • i think by non compliant with imported power boards it’s the plug is chinese so no insulation on the pins ….. illegal to sell in australia.

    • +2

      Small details

    • +2

Chinese stander is higher than Australian I guess. We can not make this kind of stuff here.

      • 220v vs 240v?

      • +3

        Chinese stander

        that explains a lot.

      • +2

chinese standard isn’t higher …..they don’t have insulation on the active and neutral pins to stop kids touching them if they pull plugs out …..also the thickness of the pins on chinese plug is different ….and earth pin is longer …….

    • +3

      This caught me out.

You won't be able to use this power strip in any workplace that requires electrical equipment to pass inspection.

I'm not sure if your insurance coverage would be affected if this caused a fire, either. The power board is clearly non-compliant. The unsheathed pins give it away immediately, as well as the problem with the upside down plug interfering with some wall socket switches.

      • Test n tag just replace the end with a compliant one, then retest. If yours isn’t doing that, get a better one.

      • +2

I’ve had my Xiaomi stuff tested and tagged at work before. It’s never been a problem. Unsheathed pins have never thrown a fault on the test and tag machine. Maybe if the sparky wasn’t tagging a thousand things in a day he might have looked at the pins.

        • Having just done a Tag and Test course myself recently, the unsheathed pins should immediately fail under Step 1 - "Visual Inspection".
As I was told in the course - About 90% of Fail results are based on failing the visual inspection alone and are never given the chance to get plugged into the test device. Sheathed pins are a mandatory requirement in Australia.

          • @randomdude: Probably should be true in theory but in construction at least practice seems to produce different results.

      • Hmmmm…. a bit confused. Unsheathed pins would be much safer right? Accordingly to my knowledge it is recently enforced in their GB 2099.9-2017 for child protection and they previously don't do this (at least not a compulsory requirement ~15yr+ ago) . Latest GB requirement (apparently not trade in Australia) even would prevent you further insert N/L pin if no earth pin is inserted. Would this cause any potential safety issue from engineering design perspective?

        • +1

unsheathed pins are less safe …..sheathed was brought in for child safety , kids don’t turn off at wall and small fingers can grab under plug and touch pins , part of australian standard, can’t legally sell a power plug in australia without it …..im sure clipsal, delta and hpm would love to sell chinese plugs and save a few cents but unfortunately they can’t and have to pay a few cents extra for australian versions.

might need to get my vernier out and measure pin thicknesses and earth pin lengths, i know the pins are different thickness,

i chop the chinese plugs off and rewire with australian, they only cost $3.50 at bunnings ….. quality of the internals should be good based xiaomi chargers i have …..

I've done teardowns of so called Aus compliant SMPS the quality can vary dramatically. Creepage distance between the high and low sides, bare minimum input filtering and protection. Absolute bottom the of barrel componentry, and the most basic of design, usually just passives.

That being said I would say its easier to get a safer compliant phone charger in Australia than it is to order one from eBay/AliExpress etc. Too much overseas cheap chargers are just dangerous (unless you know your brands, and there is probably only a few, and can avoid fakes).

Many people have down teardowns on this unit and its a quality item.

    • +1

So switch it off at the wall before you unplug it.

      Eash.

  • Do they come in black? White power boards are just so…. 90s
