Just an FYI to all the people out there wanting to get some good quality Oyster sauce, make sure you read the ingredient labels to not get ripped. Always look for the oyster sauce with the least amount of crap in it and the most Oyster extract to get bang for buck. Looking at this Ayam sauce it only has 6% oyster extract for $3. for $1 more at woolies you can get 'Haday Gold Label Oyster Sauce 530ml' for $3.90 normal price with 39% oyster extract, but it has some additional stuff in it. I personally prefer to pay a bit more and get 'Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce Premium 510g' for $7.80, 40% oyster extract and less stuff in it than the Haday Gold Brand.

    Just my 2 cents.

Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce Premium is definitely the preferred choice in our house!

Wife's response was 'I don't care how cheap. NO!'

We used LKK Premium for over a decade until we switched across to Megachef Oyster Sauce last year. Would highly recommend. Although it's a little pricier, it's quality stuff with no MSG or artificial flavours/colours. It comes in at 45% extract

The consistency out of the bottle is silky smooth and the colour is a mushroom brown. LKK is a little gloopier and closer to black in comparison.

Taste wise, we find Megachef more refined and balanced, it doesn't need much else if anything at all. LKK definitely feels heavier on the sodium and less complex, making it a good base… Especially if you're pairing it with something like Kecap Manis.

Keen to hear how you go with it if you give it a whirl!

      • good you sir, have sparked my interest. I have just purchased 2 bottles of this from Amazon.au as per your recommendation, I've rarely seen oyster sauce above 40%, interested in giving it a go. Fortunately enough it is $6.60, free shipping with prime for the 600G bottle(link below). Happy to give it a shot, still not sure what the stigma is about MSG and people not liking it, while i dont deny there are people out there that maybe sensitive to it, i dont believe there has been much research on the link to it and negative effects on people.

I believe if you ask professional chefs, i dont think most would say its bad, it is a naturally occurring compound in food anyways. There was that "chinese takeout fever" thing back in the U.S but pretty sure its unfounded.

I compare MSG fear on the same marketing level as "99% fat free", except its ok for lollies to advertise it but have like 70g of sugar per 100g and that will kill you faster than a full fat yogurt will…

        For any of those interested.
