I recently read that telcos have more ID requirements if a customer has ‘five or more activated prepaid mobile services’, as per the Telecommunications (Service Provider — Identity Checks for Prepaid Mobile Carriage Services) Determination 2017. (https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2017L00399)
The wording is ambiguous, and I believe the most logical interpretation is that this only refers to prepaid mobile services which are currently active, and does not include those old mobile numbers which have been ported or disconnected. It simply doesn’t make sense to count out-of-date travel sim cards from overseas years ago or old discontinued mobile numbers from childhood.
I was wondering how you would interpret the phrase ‘five or more activated prepaid mobile services’ in this context?
1.) All prepaid mobile services ever activated, including those discontinued or ported?
2.) Only prepaid mobile services which are currently active?
Also, I was wondering if the telcos website actually ask if one has five or more activated prepaid mobile services, when activating a prepaid sim online? I personally can't remember this!
If you deactivate them, they won't count.
