LG UQ90 65” TV - Is This Light Banding Normal?

A few weeks ago I bought an LG UQ90 65” TV from JB.

I noticed immediately that it is exhibiting light banding vertically which is very noticeable when on a light, uniform background such as the sky.

I got in touch with JB who referred me to LG. I sent photos to LG and they have come back saying that it’s normal and I should “adjust the TV settings until the issue is resolved”.

I don’t accept this and I can’t find any settings that remove this entirely. Now that I have noticed it I find it hard to ignore.

I know it’s not an expensive TV - but it is a new TV and it was a big outlay for me.

Can anyone tell me if this is indeed normal or if I should pursue it further?

Unfortunately this is a very entry level TV for LG and that banding is normal due to the way it lights up the panel - you could play with settings to reduce the effect but the rtings ratings don't put much faith in it, personally I would return it and go for a TCL C735 for a little less money, 1000% more suited and better backlighting for an extra $100 (based on rrp pricing)

Rtings even state it is quite poor with uniformity and DSE - Dirty screen Effect

"The LG UQ9000, also known as the UQ90, is an entry-level 4k TV released as part of LG's 2022 TV lineup. It's the highest-end budget model, sitting below the LG NANO75 2022 and above the LG UQ8000. There's no direct predecessor to this model, but it's very similar to the 2021 LG UP8000. Compared to LG's higher-end models, it's pretty bare, as it lacks any advanced gaming features and doesn't support Dolby Vision or HDR10+. Even though it's an entry-level model, it still runs the 2022 version of LG's proprietary webOS smart interface, which has a few notable improvements and runs quickly, and it comes with LG's popular Magic Remote"

Basically the same set for the Aussie Market sold as UQ90

The DSE Photo shows the same banding (credit to rtings)

Return it and go for a C735 TCL - Night and day and 55 inch is $1195 atm :) or you can get a C735 65 inch for $1495 (An extra $100 nets you better dimming / better PQ / Android OS / better gaming and better panel for sure and 200hz fast motion with 144hz VRR for gaming - motion is so bad on the new UQ90 vs the old 8000 LG series - newer software / design - slower panel and gaming / lower quality backlighting - costs look like theyve been cut out of the panel quality in newer models - making way for their "Nano" flagship models.

Return it, but that banding, normal for a poor backlight LCD - seems to be a common theme on cheaper panels.

I price matched the 55 inch TCL C735 online for $1065 delivered from JB

Rtings is a very good site to check before buying, the TCL isn't perfect but damn for the money, its better than that horrible effort by LG

    Return it!

    • Hello, just want to thank you for your recommendation - JB agreed to return the LG and I replaced it with the 65 C735 which is miles better. The screen is much more uniform and I definitely feel the blacks are blacker. All in all it seems like a much better TV and I'm so thankful for you for recommending it!

Thats way to distracting to watch Tv on. I would return it if possible.

    • Agreed, it fares quite poorly compared to the 8000 series LG - Only + would be WebOS 5.0 or 6.0 (2022 release) and the Magic remote included with cheaper models, personally even the Nano86 would be a good entry level option if they still had excess stock (I picked up the Nano86 for 120hz gaming - not perfect but even with the IPS panel - I see no banding like that ever, it would put me off for sure, it almost appears if the backlight polariser is poorly made and not built to a very good standard, I would say maybe manufacturing defect but rtings even show the "same" result, its a cheap panel - cut costs on new models - fast software on a slower screen

TCL would decimate this thing hands down.

Turn down the backlighting and up the brightness, my samsung KS8000 had it as it was edge light reducing the backlight helped and yes said it was normal and not a warranty thing ! if you have just purchased it take it back to JB and tell them you want to swap it or pay more for a better model assuming you have the box ??
